Depending on the age of your VCR your tracking control may not be able to correctly track your tapes. The tapes might also be slipping on some part of your drive mechanism. I would suggest taking it to your local repair depot to have it checked.

Poor tracking possibly caused by a dirty video heads. I would use a head cleaning tape. Then adjust the tracking controls for best picture.

I have a Sylvania SRD3900 DVD Player / VCR Combo that I purchased about 6 years ago. The VCR part is causing problems. When I try to play movies the picture is distorted with no sound, but it plays back...

The tracking needs to be adjusted. Sometimes it's a knob on the VCR, and sometimes it's a control on the remote. Adjust it for the best picture, and the sound shoud be restored.
Good luck, and hope this helps..

Vcr picture is scrambled on our VCR/DVD combo unit.

If you have used the VCR a good bit, the drum may need cleaning. VCRs derived their synchronization from the recorded tape and if the heads are contaminated, the sync signal may not be getting through often enough to stabilize the tracking.
This is not a fun thing to do but I once serviced these and it can be done with care and cure the problem.
You will need cotton swabs and (preferably) some pure alcohol (not rubbing alcohol). Gaining access to the drum requires removal of the housing and perhaps, in a combination unit even more, keeping mind that both of the decks works with astoundingly small signals; relatively low voltage signals and an amazing precision in the mechanisms.
If you can gain access to the drum, do NOT ever touch the shiny surface of it with fingers since the oil on the skin can really screw things up.
You can rotate the drum with a finger on the top of the drum and hold your alcohol wetted swab gently against it while rotating the drum.
If the drum is the cause of the problem, you should see some dark deposits build on the swab. If fibers catch in the opening for the heads, you will have to rotate it in the other direction while holding a tissue gently against the drum; no fibers from anything should remain snagged on the drum, otherwise your efforts will be for nought.
Good luck-

VCR tape playback not good

Check your "tracking" If the tape played fine in the old machine, then tracking is the answer, provided that the new machine records good.

DRC 8335 Playing Back VCR Recordings in a Fast Forward State

I bought mine yesterday and am having the same issues. No solution listed in the user manual to fix this and I have a rather extensive VHS tape library that I was hoping to move to DVD using this unit. Unable to watch any VHS tapes taped on my Panasonic VCR and it seems as if the tape is slipping. Tracking buttons don't fix anything. I found a blank spot at the end of the tape and taped something and it comes out fine. Could this have something to do with it being a 6 head VCR? Tapes are in SLP mode.

Vcr record problems

It sounds like the back tension is off on the unit. the back tension is controled by a small band attached to a copper or metal strip and that ia wraped around the supply reel and is adjust by an arm that swings out and contacts the tape during record or playback and keeps a steady tension on the tape. If the back tension band breaks or wears out you will get a picture that looks like the tracking is off or bad or dirty video heads. Most likly you do not have a backtension gauge and it certainly would not be fesable for you to purchace one as a good one cost about 100 bucks or so. A repair shop may beable to adjust it for you, But even their fee may be cost prohibitive. Good Luck PS please do not forget to rate this.
