Hi Jim,

This may be a boot order issue. Can you boot the drive when it is unplugged?

Then, if you can, does it work if you plug it in after windows is up and running?

If the answer to both is yes, then you need to enter your BIOS/Setup as the computer first starts, with the Iomega drive plugged in and select your hard drive as the first boot device.

If you can provide us with more detail, we can give you the specific steps. Either way, comment back and either tell us it work or tells us more about your computer... Make & Model, and we'll do our best to walk you through it.

Iomega portable hard drives connect to your computer through a USB port. When you connect the Iomega hard drive to your computer, it should pop up as an icon in your My Computer folder. If you can't find the icon in your My Computer folder then you probably need to update the driver for the device. Updating this driver is not very hard and can be done automatically from the Windows Device Manager.

Plug your Iomega hard drive into one of your computer's USB port. Click the "Start" button and go to the "Run" field. Type "Devmgmt.msc" into the Run box and press the "Enter" key. Go down to the bottom of the device manager to the "Universal Serial Bus Controller." Click on the little + (plus) sign to expand it. Look for an entry with a yellow exclamation point and click on it. Click the "Install the software automatically (Recommended)" button and then click the "Next" button. Click the "Finish" button when the installation has finished. Go to the "My Computer" folder from your "Start" menu and locate the Iomega hard drive icon. Double click the icon to gain access to the external hard drive. Hope it helps.

Hello Quincy964,
Ensure first that the computer where your Omega 500GB eGo Helium Portable plug-in, is an virus free PC. Your problem is mainly cause by an virus. You can unhidden it by 3 different methods;

Method 1:
By using "ireset" software
Here is the link : ireset
Just download the link, open the software then after just drag and drop the whole folder in the software then click reset. And all the files in your folder will automatically unhidden.

Method 2:

Just plug your Iomega 500GB eGo Helium Portable into an Linux Operating System, and automatically you can see or browse all the files in your hard drive.

Method 3:
By using Hiren's Boot CD
Just download and Hirens Boot CD (download here)
Download the file in the link, then after an successful donwload extract the files in the zip folder then burn it in Nero DVD Burner (Choose in the Nero DVD burner >burn images files) then after burning it. Restart your computer (makes sure that the Hirens Boot CD is inserted in your Optical Drive) boot it up in your Optical Drive ( F12 or F11 depending on the motherboard). After booting in the CD, Hirens meu will show then choose Mini XP. It will boot in an Windows XP like GUI, then plug-in your Iomega 500GB eGo Helium Portable into the PC then click into My Computer in the desktop, then open your folder and you will see all the files in there.

Hi, I was given an Iomega portable hard drive but I don't know how to get started using it. Can you give me a brief introduction on what to do? Thanks, Bev Brink

All that you should have to so is plug it up to your computer with the USB cable. Somewhere between a few seconds and a minute (for the first time), it will pop up under my computer. So double click on "My Computer" and you should see it listed as one of the drives. You might actually see a picture of the drive! I hope this helps!

You plug it in the USB, wait for it to be detected and to appear in My Computer then you just manually copy all your personal files to it.

Why will my HP computer not start with my iomega external hard dive connected?

Maybe the system is experienceing a hardware conflict or maybe your boot priority is set to to USB first and fixed drive second. Also does your external drive work OK when connected to computer after it has booted up properly?

Does the Iomega show up under 'my computer'?
It should be another drive (D, E, F whatever) and as such you put stuff on to it the same way you would put stuff on to your C drive.
