(There was a revision to my message that didn't get to you). The screen does work to review pictures already taken but does not work in picture taking mode nor will the camera take pictures. Does this make any difference or do you think it is still the motherboard?

The E16 error is a motherboard issue. Needs to be sent back to Canon as I assume it is a canon because they generally get an E16. If it is a different brand, let me know. Otherwise sorry for the bad news, it may be the time to just get a new camera especially if out of the warranty period. Call them first before sending to see what it is going to cost. Nothing else you really can do. Let me know how this turns out.

yup, still sounds like the motherboard as this error is specific to it and with the symptoms, unless you have a bad connection somewhere, the motherboard still would be it.

I press the ON button and its a blank black screen. Then it beeps and says Lens Error. Restart camera on the bottom left corner.

Hi.

This message could mean that the camera detected an error while retracting the lens and has automatically turned off the power.

It can happen if the lens is pressed while it is moving, or if it is jammed e.g. by debris or sand. It may be cleared by switching on again and reviewing images or taking pictures.

You might find the cost of professional servicing to be uneconomic so if all else fails you could try gently waggling the lens or taping on a vacuum to try to dislodge anything which is causing the lens to stick.

You can download the 'reference guide', which is the full user manual, here:-

Lens errors are fairly common. Usually it's sand or grit interfering with the lens extension mechanism. Or the camera's been dropped with the lens extended. Or the camera has been powered on, but the lens had been blocked preventing its extension. Or the battery ran down with the lens extended ...

Here are some things that you can do to try to correct it. They only seem to work for less than 50% of the lens errors, but if the camera is out of warranty, they're worth a try.

Camera won't function - "E18" (Canon PowerShot S230)

Try lightly tapping lens on a hard surface. This sometimes reseats the lens. If this does not work take to bits and reassemble.

E 18 problem

the E18 means the lens system has a problem. I had it with my S2 and sometimes it worked, sometimes not. Eventually it stopped working. The only solution was sending it to repair, they changed the lens system.

E16

I heard this was solved on one occasion when using a canon mem card. or one with a lower amount of memory, 16 megs. I also heard this problem described as basically the same as the E-18 that stands for a screwed lens mechanism(more info here: http://www.fixya.com/problems-solutions/t102982,p294086/Canon-IXUS-V2-Digital-Camera.aspx), usually connected with a function that is supposed to protect the lens from damage when extending against an obstruction. More often though it is related to memory issues, and memory consuming modes such as rapid shutter, or movie taking. Try a canon card, a 16 mb card, or just any card known to be operational with a similar model. If there's no effect, ask for a repair estimate from canon, or look for a reliable repair person that can actually work on these things because the manufacturers will always give you a breath taking flat rate. If you manage to squeeze canon to reveal what E-16 actually stands for let us know... Good luck
