Hi Ron You are a sweetheart and yes I got the drive out and popped the new one in and now for some reason the laptop isnt recognizing the new one and I am wondering if it is the wrong drive, it seems to hang over the edge of the laptop when it is installed and there is no satisfying click. The drive is a toshiba model XM-1702B. IBM 24X.The sellers told me they had never used the cdrom drive. Can you shed any light? Thanks Randy

Turn the R32 over on it's top. There should be a small sliding lever located just to the left of the Bay. Moving that to the left will release a small "popout" type of handle. That will release anything in the bay. If that doesn't work, something inside is broken and you may have to disassemble the laptop to get to it.

You may need to tug on the drive firmly. Maybe that's why it was sold to you? ;o)
Sometimes they are a little stubborn about coming out. It's kinda' hard to break those things, but will have to rely on your judgement, since you are there and I am here.
Like I mentioned before, there could be something broken inside that is causing a bind. But, usually a good sharp tug will do it.

    Hey, Randy!
Just wondering if you ever got that drive out.

You may have a damaged connector in the laptop. That would explain why you had such a hard time with removal and can't get the CD unit installed. Take a flash light and look down in the slot to see if you can spot any trouble. If it is damaged, it may be hard to fix without a motherboard replacement.
Do a little "stare and compare" at the back of the 2 units. Are the connectors both exactly the same" (EXACTLY!- The same number of pins and laid out in exactly the same manner?)
Will the floppy drive go back in the slot?
It sounds like you have the correct cd unit and it might be that the cd unit is damaged or defective, but it sounds more like there is an insertion problem.

Ibm thinkpad A21m 2628 floppy dr not working

Take a can or air and blow a little bit into the drive to make sure dust is not in there. Then use good known floppy disks to see if it reads at that point. If it still doesn't read then the floppy drive is bad and will need to be replaced.
