My Singer 221 makes a rattling sound when I sew. It has been cleaned and oiled, and the gears have been lubricated with the recommended motor lubricant. Is this noise normal?

It's an older one with the metal gears. It sews a wonderful stitch, but that noise is bugging me. I was hoping not to have to take it in for repair because I want to use it this weekend.

If its an older singer featherweight it should sound pretty quiet but if its a newer 221 it has plastic or nylon gears and they can make a "barking" sound

My Singer stylist 513 sewing machine makes a knocking noise from the top. I have cleaned an oiled it. When I turn the wheel manually, It appears that something is tight and then jumps.

Take out your needle and turn it. Does it turn any easier than when it is in? If this takes place you need to have it serviced to have it adjusted and/or gears possibly replaced. There are other possibilities but the adjusting and gears from underneath are most likely.

Will not zigzag or decorative stitches. New to these newer plastic style machines Always used older steel machines. This was given to me my by my sister who used it very little. Could cam be broken?

Hmm, I'm wondering if it has been cleaned and oiled recently. Older mechanicals require frequent TLC. Consult your owner's manual for cleaning and maintenance instructions:

Is your sewing machine mechanical (ie, not computerized)??? CAUTION--if your machine is computerized, do NOT proceed with the following suggestions.

If it is mechanical, have you cleaned and oiled your machine recently? Most mechanical sewing machine failures are because they have not been adequately and routinely oiled, the old oil has solidified and frozen the mechanics. I recommend Bernina oil or liquid Tri-Flow Synthetic Lube (or similar good quality sewing machine oil) for mechanical machines--do NOT use 3-in-1, cooking oil, WD-40, or the sewing machine oil from your grandmother's sewing basket. (I am not associated with any Bernina dealer.)

If it is in fact frozen, pick up a bottle of liquid Tri-Flow Synthetic Oil at the hardware store. Oil one or two drops in every oil hole (see your manual) and also every place where metal rubs on metal. But DO NOT oil any plastic gears, rubber, or belts. If it is still stiff or frozen, direct a hot handheld hair dryer into the top and bottom mechanism of your machine. See if that loosens it up. You may have to repeat.

Once your machine is working again, place a drop or two of good sewing machine oil as directed above. Be sure to use a small brush to clean the lint and dirt out of your machine, especially around the feed dogs and bobbin area. (Caution: Compressed air will sometimes force the dirt and lint into areas that cannot be cleaned.) And continue to use good quality sewing machine oil to keep it running. Recommendation: every time you change a bobbin, after 8 hours of sewing, or every six months if it is not in regular use.

How do I set the bobbin on the singer featherweight so it does not hit he upper plate

Go to the Singer Sewing Machine Site, select Support, and there is an option to download your user's manual free. On page 7, it shows you how to insert both the bobbin and bobbin case.

I have seen many of these cases, and here is how they work. You'll notice a lever on the front of the case. When that lever is in, you can't remove the bobbin. When you need to insert the case, you have to lift the lever, making sure that the protrusion in the case is on top.

Bobbin thread bunching on singer sewing machine...have changed needle and tensions! Help

Try a ball point 11/70 or stretch 11/70 needle. Also rethread the entire machine. Make sure the needle is inserted correctly in the sewing machine. I had this same thing happen to me recently and I found I had the needle backwards.

Have singer sewing machine that the tension on the bobbin isn't very good no matter what i turn the tension to. the model # is 221K1 or 221-1 it seems like it is also needing oiled down there but don't...

99% of the time its not the bobbin tension its the tension on the upper thread that is off. Try rethreading the machine and then adjuat the upper tension slowly if needed. The bobbin area does need to be cleaned quite often usually every 8 to 10 hours of sewing and its simple to do. Remove the bobbin and look closley at the bobbin casing there are two latches holding it to your machine, one on either side you push them gently to the side and the case will come out, clean and oil entire area and replace the case and push the latches back into place and then replace bobbin in machine aalways use scrap material for a few minutes to make sure everything is good to go and that no oil gets on you project. any machine oil is ok to use its not necessary to use sewing machine oil and a small bottle will last for a long time.

Try oiling all the moving parts with WD40, old oil on the machine may have congealed, make sure there is no thread stuck in the raceway.

What kind of bobbin singer 301 machine use

The Singer 301 uses the same bobbin as the Singer 221 (also known as a Featherweight). Not surprisingly it's called a Class 221/301 bobbin and is Singer part number 45785. If you don't have a Singer dealer or large sewing machine repair shop in your area, I would suggest purchasing from a reputable online seller such as Vintage Sewing or Sewing Machine 221 Sale. Below is a picture of what both the older and newer style of this bobbin looks like. 11da97d.jpg
