Simpletech is a plug and play device compatible with vista and xp. you dont need a software to use it unless you wanted to access the quick backup button function when you press the simpletech logo. software is available at their support website: www.simpletech.com/support/

Hi,
a 6ya expert can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.
best thing about this new service is that you are never placed on hold and get to talk to real repairmen in the US.
the service is completely free and covers almost anything you can think of (from cars to computers, handyman, and even drones).
click here to download the app (for users in the US for now) and get all the help you need.
goodluck!

I've met space limit for my SimpleTech external drive even though my internal drive still has space and both are 250 GB. Are there SimpleTech programs taking up space and if so how much of that 250 GB...

Your internal drive is different than your external drive. If you put more files onto your SimpleTech drive, then that one is going to fill up faster. The best thing to do would be to go through your SimpleTech drive and delete anything that you don't need. I don't remember my SimpleTech drive coming with any software on the drive, but if it did, it didn't take up much space.

I backed up my entire computer on my SimpleTech Pinin Farina external hard drive and now I can't figure out how to find a file on it that I need. I see all the backup files, but I can't figure out how to...

Backup software compresses the files and encodes them to an image file made up of a series of sequenced files. The same software you used to do the backup should have the restore options needed to locate desired files. SimpleTech website shows Fabrik to be the name of the backup software.
If you utilized, there's also an online backup site used to store files. Following link is the users guide:

I have SimpleTech drive that I used Storage Sync to back up C drive. Took drive to work and since all the files are 'bpa' cannot open them. I compare this to a simulation of what I bought the drive for -...

The BPA files are the backed up copies of your data. The simpletech utility backs up your files to compresse file ending in BPA. Any computer running the simpletech restore program can extract the data from these files.

You will simply need to install this software on a spare computer in order to test the backups. Frankly though I would just use windows backup to copy the files/folders you want to the drive raw as this can be read anywhere.

Hope this helps FixYa,

Reformatted without downloading software to my desktop

robilynn -

Here is the driver page, you'll have to get the model number off of the drive to download the proper one:

http://www.simpletech.com/support/support_downloads.php

Here is the page for the manuals (top of the page), just choose Pro or Duo pro for whichever is the drive you have:

http://www.simpletech.com/support/guides.php

That should give you everything you need to get it back up and running.

Makes clicking sound

Hello, unfortunately there is a large chance that your drive is dying, and if the clicking noise is reasonably loud, it will die soon.

About the only thing you can do is attempt to read it in a system that allows you to force mount a drive.

BackTrack is a free Live OS, Meaning it boot's and runs off of a CD. Simply download and burn the ISO (Disk Image) and then when booting your computer follow the instructions on your screen for your Boot Options Menu and Select Boot From CD.

Once booted, Plug in your drive and BT should recognize it. If it can be recognized, you will be able to attempt to repair, or at the least should be able to bring your data over.

***Your drive is physically failing, and to be safe, please prioritize what your going to attempt to save before attempting this and work as quickly as possible.

Get BackTrack3 here:
http://www.remote-exploit.org/cgi-bin/fileget?version=bt3-cd

While the BT method may seem like a long and tedious process, its important to note that aside from actually replacing the electronics inside your drive, this is about the only way you can get your data back.

The final option is to stop using the drive completely and send it out for data recovery which is elaborately expensive.

I hope this information has helped in some way.
Sorry to hear about your drive.

No access to operating instructions for my 250 GB unit

You can store files by dragging them to the window that the hard drive is open in. You can also retrieve files by dragging them from the hard drive and dragging them back to your documents or desktop. This should FixYa.

Installation cd

Hello, technically you should not need the install CD for this as any modern computer you plug it into should be able to recognize it and use it. However if you feel you need any downloads go to the manufacturers website which is HERE. Good Luck! Dr. Know
