Question about Network & Wireless Adapters

Laptop computer and wireless router problem

I have a Linksys Wireless-G router and I am using a Dynex wireless-G adapter. The laptop is a Toshiba Satellite.
I installed the wireless connection with no problem and was able to surf the internet. As soon as somebody logged off and logged in as a different user the internet connection was lost. I had to go through the whole process of establishing the wireless connection again. This also happens when the computer is shut off or the adapter is unplugged and plugged back in.

It appears that there was a Belkin adapter installed on the laptop at one time. It is not my computer so I will have to look at it again and make sure that it was uninstalled. Would that make a differenece?

I was at my wits end so I hope someone can help me. Also, I read somewhere online that the Dynex adapter is junk so maybe that is the problem. Would it be better to buy one of the more expensive notebook adapters?

Thanks for your time and consideration.

I have an old laptop that has a linksys wireless-b notebook adapter and my new computer with a linksys router attached is a linksys dual-band wireless-n. I can not get the notebook to link to the router...

Most of the newer routers use a newer type of encryption (WPA or WPA2) which is not supported by older 802.11b hardware.

Either set the Linksys router to use WEP encryption, or get a newer 802.11g card for the old laptop which can use WPA or WPA2 encryption.

Older versions of Windows XP also need to be upgraded to Service Pack 3 or apply this patch:

SMC EZ Connect 2862W-G does not see Linksys network

It shows that your wireless router and wireless adapters are both working. One thing to try is changing your wireless channel. Since you are already using 11, try maybe 1 or 9. Check if your SMC adapter will pick up the wireless signal.

By the way, how far is your computer (using the SMC adapter) to your wireless router?

-- make sure that the wireless settings of your router match the wireless settings if you are using the utility of the linksys adapter
-- make sure also that you dont have any firewall or any security on your computer
-- you may also try disabling the adapter wireless utility and use the wireless xp zero configuration instead.

You are connected to access point but the internet cannot be found.

Do you have a connection wizard that you can run on your computer? Linksys offers them for downloading at their website. Try that -
have you named your home network so your wireless connection can "find" it? You don't mention how your main computer is networked in. A wireless adapter for a notebook will need to have a Linksys connection wizard run on the laptop.

If you have a Linksys router connected to your main computer, it should already have the piece of software you need. Most likely, you'll need to put it on a flash drive and install it from that onto your laptop. the wizard helps also to diagnose the right settings.

If you want to post what you are using for your main network (linksys router?) and which operating systems you are using, that will help.

For example, in Vista, you'll need to enable the option for "network discovery" under your laptop's control panel/network and sharing center.

You also need to have certain settings on your main computer for the wireless to work - there are two main types of wireless connections - B and G. Most of today's routers and cards will do both, but if you have an older router, it might not be set up to handle the newer or combined types. They run on different frequencies, so your laptop might not be "reading" your router's frequency. Also, if you have other wireless/radio frequency equipment near your laptop, it can interfere with the signal being received right.

You also need to be sure that your firewall allows the linksys system to access your computer (allowed programs).
