Question about Canon PowerShot SD400 / IXUS 50 Digital Camera
Try NOT connecting your camera to your computer.
The best way to download pictures from your camera to your computer involves removing the memory card from the camera and plugging it into a card reader (either built-in to the computer or connected via USB or FireWire). This is likely to be faster than connecting the camera to the computer, and won't run down your camera's batteries.
Once the card is plugged in, it will appear to your computer as a removable drive. You can use the operating system's drag&drop facility to copy pictures from the card to the computer's hard drive, the same way you copy any other files. Or you can use any photo cataloging program such as Picasa.

SOURCE: unrecognized USB device
I'm having the same problem, just called Canon and they said that there's a missing or damaged .dll (driver) that's preventing Windows from recognizing the camera. I looked into getting support from Microsoft but I don't want to pay for it, so I didn't bother. I bought an inexpensive USB card reader from SONY (about $20) and used that to download the photos.

SOURCE: camera won't connect
I had the same problem. The driver did not install correctly. I then connected the camera without the memory card in, and the driver installed correctly. Subsequent connections of camera with memory card installed, worked fine.

Vista is your problem. Solution...buy an inexpensive card reader to download your pics to a folder you create on your desktop. From there, you can send the pics to your photo editing software.
