Yes it sounds like the rod broke but to be sure remove the spark plug and push a straw or something flexible about 2 inches into the cylinder and then turn the engine over by hand to see of the piston is moving.

What causes an 8 hp Briggs and Stratton engine to cut off after running about 30 minutes. Will not restart until it cools.

B&S engines have a problem with stretching valve stems and they will stop and be hard to start from that problem
check the valve clearance when hot and it should be .010" inlet and .012" exhaust
it is necessary to keep the fins around the head and cylinder free from grass and dust or the engine will overheat as well

Briggs& Stratton 18hp OHV Intek engine will run only under a load.

Your PTO safety switch is opening intermittently. Would help if you would always add your model # such as 917.100000 that way I could look up on Sears site and tell you approx. Location of switch.

Intek 6.5 HP in a Craftsman 21'' mulcher/bagger --loss of power--

No - 6.5HP is enough to cut 3" at a fast walking pace. I would suspect a blown head gasket.

Using oil...no leakage...no smoking

by recently, do you mean, since it got hot outside? if you're using a multi-vis oil, it gets too thin in hot weather and will "vaporize" and burn, not enough to cause smoking. use a good 30 weight oil. other than that, can't think of anything else that would cause it with no leaking or smoking
