I have a different solution, one that might not require you to wipe your computer completely. You could try booting into safe mode first, by hitting f8 after your boot screen, but before you see the windows logo. Select safe mode.

Once you've successfully booted, hold down your windows key and hit "R". Type "msconfig" and hit enter.

Under the services tab, click the "hide all microsoft services" and uncheck everything you see. Under the startup tab, uncheck everything also. Click OK and restart.

When it boots normally, and you see the popup box saying you made some changes.. etc etc: click the checkbox to hide, and click OK.

Now, go to www.combofix.org, download, and run. Follow the instructions carefully - it will create a system restore point and install the recovery console. It may reboot your computer.

Once it is done and a log has shown on your screen, download and install a free antivirus such as AVG (free.avg.com), update, and run a full scan.

After this, you should be OK.

A recovery disk either comes with your computer or is installed on another partition that is accessible via a function key at startup - so when you turn on your computer, you hit F# (usually 8, 10, 11, 12) and it should give you some options to restore the recovery partition.

The whole thing about a recovery disc is that it includes your Windows CD Key on it. One of the first things you should do when you get your computer is burn a recovery disc off the partition on your computer called "Recovery" in most cases. If you did not do this, and still have system restore enabled that would be your best option. From what I've read that model came with Windows Vista so, instructions to access "Windows System Restore"

Step One: Open the start menu and in the search field type "Restore".
Step Two: Select System Restore
Step Three: Now once that loads its going to suggest the most recent restore date it has, which would be two days ago if you install Windows Updates, that isn't going to help a lot, so click "Choose a different restore point." Hopefully there is another restore point on the list. Run the oldest restore point you have, and if that is two days ago, hopefully you didn't have the virus then. If you did have it two days ago, and no older restore point, then download an anti-virus here. This is a free version of Avira anti-virus, just run its scan and it should delete the virus for you. I do recommend purchasing an anti-virus program though. Avira being one of my top suggestions, followed by Norton 360. Please note to uninstall any previous existing anti-virus's before installing another for they may conflict causing tons of memory usage and making your computer worse =P. So, goodluck and if you need any clarification or any additional help just leave a comment and I'll get back to it once I can.

If you cant get the manufacturer to send you one, then you can use an OEM disk from newegg.com. You arn't technically supposed to do this, but I think since you bought the COA sticker then you are entitled to do whatever is necessary to get your computer working again.

How do i erase reinstall the computer from the recovery discs?

If you don't have your manual, get it from Acer website. Just run the recovery program and follow the instructions. This is just like formatting, it will overwrite the HDD. For you this should be fine, and even formatting is useless. So Follow the Manual.

I have read problems about erasing, if you don't make a extra partition the recovery system will flag out. Seen the second disk error out and not finish, now you have no laptop.

Read about people who needed a new HDD and put it in and couldn't get the recovery disk's to work.

Like I said, formatting is useless anyway, the only true way to clean a hard drive HDD is to use programs that zero write the drive.
But either way, if you format or erase, you can risk not getting the recovery to work.

If you are worried about malware (virus, trojan) Get Bitdefender or Avira, they have a free virus program. Then if you like it, when you can but it.

These are in the top 5 for today's Anti-Virus. What ever you do don't use AVG.

You may have files that you want to keep that you saved on your hard drive, but if you haven't backed them up then you will have to lose them because the only thing you can do to fix this is use the factory recovery disk which will wipe your hard drive clean.Just put the disc into the disc tray and you should get an option to start the recovery disc when you turn on the computer, it will tell you to press a key to start it which might be f3 or something different, I'm am not sure what key but when you have done that you should be able to start the recovery and wipe the hard drive clean and it should solve your problem

I would have recomended Norton Antivirus or a full programme anti virus to clean your drive. However, it is almost too late for repairs.
You need to format your drive but as there seems to be a "Worm" type virus, I guess due to the problems you are having trying to re install OS, it will keep reinfecting the drive due to it being resident in the memory.
You really need an antivirus programme to clean your Sony Vaio before you can succesfully place an uninfected OS on your drive. I hope the recovery partion is not infected as well, a good anti virus programme will clean it though. When it is clean, boot with a system disk with the same OS on it and when you get to drive "C" hopefully drive "D" will be available, assuming "D" is the recovery drive partition.

When you get your anti virus disk, you will need it to be a bootable disk with the format command on it. When it has been cleaned you can then format the disk and put your recovery OS disk back on.
Hope this helps.

Do you have the Recovery disk that came with your computer? If so you want to place the recovery disk in the drive, power down the computer, power it back up, holding the F12 key down so you can boot from your DVD. Go through the recovery process for the Operating System, and this should get you around the virus.

Need 873n recovery disk and XP operating system

You will have to buy windows xp from somewhere like best buy or circuit city. unless you have a friend who has a distributable copy. Other wise its illegal to use someone elses copy of xp. You may want totry to contact the manufacturere of your computer if it is newer and see if they will give you another cop(unlikely but hey worth a try). If you end up buying a new operating system I would go with windows vista if I were you.
