Your router is not connecting you to a different network.it`s your laptop which is connecting automatically to a preferred network or you can say it is connecting to whichever unsecured network is available.please clear ypur preferred network list or you`ll keep facing the same problem.i can`t explain you how you can do that because you have not mentioned the OS you are using.please use google for the same.thankyou

Unable to connect to router on new tablet

192.168.1.1 is a gateway address, if you give it to the tablet, it will not work. Is this your Own Network? OR Are you trying to hook up to an unknown network? What is the Make of the Tablet? If this is your own Network, make sure that you do not have MAC Filtering switched ON on the Router, this will let the tablet authenticate, but when connecting to the network, the router will refuse the connection as the MAC address of the Tablet is not in it's Safe MAC address table. If this is not your network, contact the owner of the network, if you are trying to smooch free wifi... Tough Luck.

I have installed my wireless router successfully, and the ethernet cable is still in my computer, when i take this out, i cannot connect to the internet, it says unknown network, but it does say i am...

This is an odd one. I'm assuming that the computers and laptops etc that you have, already have wireless connections (wireless dongles, wireless cards etc) installed.

I'm wondering if the firewall is preventing wireless connection, or that the router security settings need to be authenticated on the computers to access the device wirelessly (page 6)

This is taken from the manual , a link to which i include here: (page 17 and 18) describe the problem you are having
"
I can't connect to the Internet wirelessly.
If the light on the front of the Router is solid green, then your
Router is connected to the Internet. You may not be connected
to the Router's wireless network. Please refer to "Adding
Computers to Your Network" in this manual for instructions"

Having trouble connecting. I see my encrypted router, but it shows as "unknown." And when I try to connect with it, connection fails. Says not in range although I'm in my own house. :o)

you said that you can see the wireless network but it shows as unknown network
I think SSID broadcast on your wireless network must be disabled.
You will need to enable the SSID broadcast of your network.
Also try to change the wireless channel on the router.
WRT54G router's IP address will be 192.168.1.1. if you have not changed it.
Do you have any other computer connected to the router woth the ethernet cable ?
If you do not have the computer connected to the route then connect 1 computer to the rotuer with the ethernet cable.
Do not change any wireless setting on the wireless computer.
You will need to open the set up page of the router
Click Here for more info about how to change the wireless settings

you will have to go into the routers setting and set it to allow wireless connections. it may just be set to send out the SSID but not allowed connection. or the saved key has changed from the rougher defalt key

Wifi connection & itouch

I finally discovered the problem. I have a Linksys wireless
router, so when I tried to log on with my iTouch, I got the
message "Unable to join network "my network name" when
I typed in my password. One day, after many trys, I tried
typing in the network security key for my router, and Voila,
it worked. For some unknown reason (to me), the iTouch
recognizes the the network security key as the password.

Unknown bandwidth siphon

Exactly how is this bandwidth being siphoned off? Or do you just have a process on your machine using all the bandwidth?

If your neighbors are getting on your connection, you can use shared key logins under WEP/WPA and you can use MAC address filtering.

Both can be configured in the router itself quite easily. For assistance with the router see Dell's user guide: http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/network/p57205/en/index.htm
