This happened to me - it ended up being a wire that had gotten caught in a spring at the base of the washer. The spring had rubbed through the wire and grounded it, causing it to melt apart.
Fixed by soldering the wire back together and tying it to the base to ensure it didn't get caught in the spring again. I also had to take apart the timing mechanism and pull apart two contacts that had fused together.
