Discs won't play.

This relatively little used machine will no longer play discs; the disc will load normally but won't spin. This happened some months ago and I was able to correct it (temporarily) by removing the cover and kick starting the disc with my finger, but that method no longer works. The machine's display will only show these few messages: "welcome" "open" "close" "cannot play" "no disc" (even when a disc is loaded), and "off". No other data or messages will show in the display window. When I hit the play button on the remote the machine makes a few brief noises, as if it's trying to do something, but that's it

My television seems to recognize the dvd player -- I get a window showing Sony DVD Player, dvd, cd, but aside from "cannot play disc" and "insert disc" (again, when a disc is loaded), nothing else.

None of the remote's other buttons seem to correct this problem.
