Question about Washing Machines

1 Answer

The washer is nearly 9 years old and has been used daily. We love the machine- especially because of the fast spin cycle but recently we are experiencing problems with the load going out of balance. No matter how carefully we balance the load, most times- in the last 2 weeks- we have to go back and rearrange the clothing so that the spin cycle finishes. Could it possible be that the supporting springs that keep the tub in the centre of the machine are worn out and need replacing? Or is it a case that simply the machine has had it's day and needs to be replaced?

The machine is a Fisher & Paykel 7.5Kg Smart Drive.

The machine has previously worked OK at its current location so I don't think it's the floor.

I talked with a Washing Machine Repairer.(I'm not good at fixing stuff). He said it would cost $250 to repair so we have decided to save up and buy a new washer-hopefully we can limp along till then!

    Thanks,

    Tim

It would help to know what model we are talking about. I general terms the suspension can wear and depending on the make it could be something other than springs. Also, a change in flooring will also give the same results. Unless it is on a cement floor , the floor could have changed and be adding to the problem.

Yes , those suspension rods can be replaced and are not very difficult to do at all. You will take the top off and put them in one at a time from there. Replace all not just one or two.

Washer will spin but not very fast

It is very likely that the transmission needs to be replaced/repaired.

Inside most top loading washer transmissions is a small part that lets the motor drive the transmission in either the agitation mode or the spin mode. When this part shifts back and forth into the position for wash or spin, it can get broken.

When it locks the transmission into the spin position, the motor and transmission can now spin the wash tub to help remove excess water from the clothes. When this lock breaks, the washer will still wash and agitate and the motor will still pump out the water in the washer, but without the fast spinning of the tub, clothes will not be damp dry enough to be put into the dryer. Sometimes the unit will spin a little, but not nearly enough to really remove water from the clothes, especially if you're doing towels and other heavy items, etc.

The part itself isn't much money, but the problem is that the repair isn't easy for even a good DIY'er to perform, as you have to remove the agitator, wash tub, tub seal boot, and the transmission from the cabinet just to get ready for the repair process.

IF you can even get the repair part for the broken transmission (difficult as most manufacturers only let authorized service dealers buy these sub-components these days), it will be VERY messy to disassemble the transmission and remove all the oil and broken metal pieces from the transmission lock part and then completely clean out the inside of the transmission housing replace the gear assembly and put in the new lock piece, plus add back new, clean appliance trans oil and a new end seal on the transmission housing.

When I first started out as a service tech, we used to rebuild the washer transmissions on used customer "trade-ins" when we had nothing else scheduled, so we could resell the used appliances and make a few bucks.

Bottom line is that for all the time, mess and expense you're going to have to go through, it is probably best to buy a new washer. Especially if your washer is more than 10 years old, since the tub is probably starting to get rust spots, etc.

I have a 20 year old Maytag washer. It is in EXCELLENT condition. We have never had a problem with it! A few weeks ago, the spin cycle began to have a growling noise resembling a bearing. It sounds like a...

Your old Maytag is a much better machine than the new Maytag's, but replacing the drum bearing and seal is a somewhat expensive and rather difficult job, requiring a couple special tools. Not usually a do it yourself job. Unless you really love that machine, it's time for a new one. The average life of a washer is about 9 years. Look into the front load models which use much less water and spin out over twice as fast as your old top load machine. LG is the top rated by consumer reports, but you don't have to buy the top of the line models to get the the direct drive motor with 7 year part warranty. Other companies make a pretty good product also.
Don't bother rating this "solution" as anything but a FixYa lowers my rating.

Washer won't spin fast, only slow

tyr removing the lower acees panel from the uint , ther is a "button trap" located there to catch debris from entering pump assy, chances are its clogged and if it cant drain all the water it wont go into high speed spin, also you MUST use an HE detergent. HE detergent specifically designed for front loading washers

Washer won't stop spinning

i am a recently retired appliance engineer of 20 years, if the fault is not right after he has called then write to the manager of the company, if he is sole operator then write to him, explaining it like you said above, ask that the engineer stay and watch till the very end of the cycle as thats where the fault is, if he has already worked on the machine fetch them back? alternatively just ask a different engineer who knows what he is on about, to me this sounds like a circuit board problem either the timer or main pcb module, i presume this is a computer control washer with a digital display, hope this has helped you at least as to where to start, thank you.
