Hi, you just simply need to remove the starter and observe the fly wheel if the teeth are fine, if yes upen the starter and change the Bendix if the teeth of the Bendix are still good. An the Bendix is the part that meet with flywheel to turn the engine .
several reasons
the teeth on the ring gear were damaged from continuous grinding during pinion engagement or engagement of the starter when the engine is running causing a burring of the teeth that altered the mesh ability and jammed the ring gear and pinion
metal in the teeth of the ring gear that causes a jam in rotation
starter motor not engaging before rotating
wrong no of teeth on replacement starter pinion or starter motor
Check and see if starter bolts are tight, if they are are tight you need to check flywheel bolts and teeth on flywheel. Sometimes starter teeth or flywheel teeth wear down. Could be the starter.
Check the teeth for something jamed. Has it set up for many years, maybe rusted bar. Does the motor run? If so maybe a cam gear broken or jam. Does the teeth on the bar move when removed from unit? Or does the motor run when bar removed? To many question to ask need more info.
Look at the cutting teeth when the motor is running...are they turning????
