Auto mute on an A/V receiver amp usually is an indication that the video input is not present on the selected input jack , this is done so that if video device is shut off for any reason the amp does not send out "white noise" thru speakers and could damage them if loud enough

You did not mention which operating system you are using and it is a bit different in each.

XP: click start > click control panel > click display > click screen saver tab > click the power button > adjust timers to never > click apply

Windows 7: click start > control panel > power option > change plan options >adjust to never > save changes

I just bought a used jvc rx9010. it powers up but no sound from any speaker and shows headphone all the time what should a layperson check???

No speakers are selected if just headphone is displayed. Press the speaker button just under the power button. No station is tuned when auto muting is displayed. Hook up an antenna to the receiver or use a different source like a cd player.

From the remote control only: Press MUTING to turn off the sound through all speakers and headphones connected. "MUTE" appears on the display and the volume turns off. To restore the sound, press MUTING again. Turning MASTER VOLUME or pressing VOLUME +/- also restores the sound.

When i put the fm radio it display auto muting and doesnt have sound, this only happens with the radio because the dvd sounds ok

"Auto Muting" in the context of FM means the output will be muted if the signal is so weak it would result in mostly noise anyway. Interstation radio noise can be annoying and dangerous at high volumes.

I tried restoring the sound by pressing Muting on master volume. Auto Muting still appears on the display and I can't restore the sound.

"Auto Muting" is for FM reception only and means it will mute the FM audio unless the signal is strong enough to provide decent audio.

Re-evaluate your symptom and corrective actions for relevancy.

Auto muting on when on am/fm and no sounds come out. everything else is fine.

That's normal.

The Auto Muting mode mutes the audio output of the tuner if the station is not sufficciently strong to be accurately tuned. Otherwise you would hear all that interstation hash noise.

Press the FM Mode button to change it to Mono if you want to manually tune a hard-to-reach station. It will be in Mono.

Page 26:

AUTO MUTING
Normally select this.
When a program is broadcast in stereo, you will hear stereo sound; when in monaural, you will hear monaural sound.
This mode is also useful to suppress static noise between stations. The AUTO MUTING indicator lights up on the display.
