My Navman had a similar problem however it turned out NOT to be the tube but the electronics.
Since no parts are anylonger available I tried the following with success. First I tested the tubes a few seconds in a microwave oven (YES, a microwave!) and the tubes lit up. A Marine repair shop let me know that the HT transformer was blown, however I tested this transformer myself and turned out to be OK. I purchased a small CCFL Inverter for DC 12V at Euro 4.50 and installed the assy in the housing of my Tracker 5607. Perfect backlight again! Day/night switch works OK, only day backlight cannot be adjusted anymore and remains on full power. I aleways had the plotter on full power anyhow.

Why do red objects, but not the white and black parts, sometimes cannot be seen on the monitor?

Red is the universal warning colour, so chosen because it is visible in most lighting conditions.

How can I see display better in sunlight?

Viewing screens that make use of "back lights" (LEDs, fluorescent, etc) to see / read the display in direct sunlight is often very difficult. Increasing the back lighting level is one method - but even when at 100% brightness, it is hard to overcome the sun. Shielding the screen from sunlight with your hand, body, etc., is often the only way that works effectively.

On my Dell E193fpc monitor, the background lighting goes off after a few seconds. The actual Screen-image is still there (can be seen in bright sunlight). How can I get the backlighting to work proper

This sounds as though there might be a problem with the inverter (this is a component that supplies a high voltage for a tube(s) that illuminate the screen.

As there are high voltages on inverters, this is really a job for a repair shop.

The colour of my hp4520s has changed....the predominant colour now is pink, however its hard to distinguish the colours....and some portions blink

Try
Start > Control Panel > Display > Calibrate Color > How do I calibrate My Display >
Just step through this carefully and hopefully your colors will be corrected.

I have a 4520s but never have done this.

My screen of my 'coolpix s225' has gone completley blank. it is a greyish colour but occasionly a small strip of screen will work. its nothing to do with the lens becasuse i cant even view pictures

The display being white can be due to failure of the LCD or the CCD which is the optical sensor of the camera. So to confirm check the older picture to be seen on the display. Confirm this by checking the card on your PC. If the display is not seen, then the LCD can be faulty, fault on the linking cable or the control board.

However if the older images are seen well then the LCD is working correctly and the fault can be failure of the CCD- charge coupled device in the camera. If you have accidently exposed the camera directly to high intensity light / sunlight, then it is possible that it is damaged. Remove the battery and keep the phone aside to reset and try as a last resort. Get estimate before you decide. It will be good to have it checked at the authorised service as you do not have to run around for spares.

Monitor does not display all the icons but a computer displays well when connected to an external desktop monitor

If you mean the desktop isn't completely filling the display, you need to be sure the resolution is set correctly. Native resolution for this model is 1500x1050, according to Dell's site. (Native resolution is the one the screen was designed to best work with. Unlike older CRT monitors, some resolution settings don't work well on LCD screens.) You can check and set the resolution through the Windows control panel.

If you mean that the display is dim and hard to make out, but is okay on an external monitor, you probably have a backlight issue. Without the backlight, you can't see what's on the screen even though the display is working. The usual cause of backlight failure is a bad inverter. The inverter is a small circuit board in the display that provides power for the lamp. Replacements are available for most laptops, and changing one is normally not a major job.

Faulty Display

It could be a bad connection in the wiring between your display and the keypad. You should get it checked out at a cell phone store especially if it's still covered under warranty.

A really dim display like you're describing is most likely a backlight problem.  If your inverter went bad you wouldn't have any display at all.  you need to get your backlight changed.
