Check to make sure the handbrake is completley off. Since I don't know what kind of machine you have, I'll have to give you a generic fix. The handbrake has a switch which turns on a light to let you know it is engaged. In addition it most likely sends a signal to a nuetralizer valve in the transmission which dumps pressure back to sump preventing gear engagement, so you can't drive with the handbrake engaged. If the switch is out of adjustment, the handbrake may be released and the switch can still be on. Check at the bottom of the handbrake handle for the switch. I have found that if you are a little forcefull in releasing the handle, a lot of times the switch will make the right contact. I'm 99% sure this is the problem. Marvin T.

Hi there
Check your brake fluid level, if that is right then check your handbrake switch. Sometimes the locknut gets loose.

I'm driving an automatic gear car. At traffic light, do I put gear to neutral and pull handbrake, or do I continue to step on the brake. Any difference on either action.

just keep your foot on the brake. It cannot do any damage, the auto box is designed for this

If you put in neutral you risk making a mistake and selecting reverse. or may not select gear inadvertantly on a hill and roll backwards.

Isuzu Trooper 1997. Automatic Transmission holds gears too long.

Their is a power and normal drive in trooper's power for pulling a trailer and normal for normal driving. The power drive only changes gear at higher R.P.M. Their is a switch on the plastic cover under the handbrake with p & n their is a light in the dash as well. If you are not aware of this switch then just needs switching over if you are aware of it then its probably the fuse to activate it or a wiring problem with it, Cheers
