Question about Craftsman 20 Hp 42" Deck Lawn Tractor

1 Answer

Primary mower belt on my Craftsman 48" lawn tractor has worn out prematurely. I installed a new belt this spring, & after less than 25 hours of service, it is 75% shredded from the inside. When I installed it, it didn't appear to be rubbing on anything, as I ran it in the garage with the clutch engaged to test.....please advise what could be causing the premature wear....

Hi. The belt must be trying to move a pulley that is either frozen, partially frozen or excessively loose. remove the belt and check the action of each pulley. If you have a frozen one, use some WD-40 to unfreeze it and if you have an excessively loose one replace the entire pulley assembly as it is worn out.

Yth2248 loses speed on slightest grade. new drive belt not helpful

Roy if it is the correct belt and fairly new, check your manual for belt adjustment, if it shows that there is no adjustment the pulleys may be worn out, on a lot of mowers the pulleys are ware items and changed more often to correct slipping issues. The other thing to check is the belt tensioner if equipped, it could be seized, weak or missing spring or it may even be adjustable by cable end being threaded or slotted bolt holes on tensioner arm.
Check the attached links, instruction and guides, Good luck

Look under the the left foot rest, there is a belt installation diagram. It will show how to install the belt correctly. It is real simple to replace belt, but the belt must be installed on the pulleys, correctly or it will fail, every time. Sincerely,Brad Locke

Sounds like to me you need a new belt! The belt is automatically tensioned by a spring on most mowers by MTD, the major mfr for most mowers including craftsman.

Im having a problem with the mower primary v

Most times, belt wear is the result of mis-aligned pulleys and guide pulleys or damage to them from foreign objects. Some are spring loaded, and if the spring is not positioned properly, the tension on the belt is affected and the belt will prematurly wear. Check to be sure that each pulley is smooth, and rolls freely, some will have grease zerks that should be periodically lubricated, some will be factory sealed for lubrication. Look at the belt to see if fraying is present (bad pulley, or alignment) or just a break that might indicate a seizing up on one of the pulleys. Any objects in the belt path?

I have a craftsman riding lawn mover 42" model #917270812

Hi Paul It sounds like the belt is worn, stretched, or possibly just two long for your machine. Save yourself a lot of aggrivation by checking your operator manual and getting exactly the right belt for your mower.

You don't say how old your machine is but if it has been mowing for many, many hours, the tensioning spring may need to be replaced. If that is the case you can order a new one at Sears.com
