Do you have to disconnect the battery if you have a battery cutoff switch?

A cutoff switch will disconnect loads that are connected to the battery. A battery selector switch can switch your load from one battery to the other , combine batteries together or disconnect all loads entirely.

When in the off position, the switch cuts off all power from the battery to any loads connected down stream from the switch.
Sometimes float switches and other devices are connected directly to the battery. Therefore the battery selector switch will not disconnect this load when switched to the off position.

How do you wire the swithch when there is a starting battery and 2 trolling motor batteries?

The switc his designed for only two batteries. You could parallel the two trolling motor batteries and put their leads under one terminal on the switch, but any time the switch was in that position, both batteries would be feeding the trolling motor load at the same time.

In any case, always connect the starting motor to it's own terminal. You want to keep that battery seperated from the trolling motor load so that you do not run down your starting battery.

Hi Don!

If you wish to charge one battery at a time, the switch should be set to "off". Charger clips will connected to the batt you wish to charge hot-to-hot and cold-to-cold. If you want to charge both batts at once (not really recommended) switch set to "all".

Hope this helps.

How do you install the perko switch in a car?

You need to find a good place to mount it that is protected and solid. Then you will need to get enough battery cable and battery lugs to replace the positive cable that right now goes to your starter. There may also be a smaller positive cable on your battery that goes to your alternator or some other accessory. You will want to replace it, as well. The switch is numbered 1 and 2. If you are only using one battery, then use 1. If you are using two batteries, then use 1 fto attach the positive cable(s) from one battery, and 2 for the other battery. Then run your cable(s) from the Common terminal on the switch to your starter and any accessories that require battery power. Never shut off the switch while your vehicle is running or you will blow the diodes in your alternator!

I have a RV with a Perko switch. On the back side it says #1 and common and #2. How would I wire a second 12 volt battery in so that I can switch from 1 to 2 or all and off? Thank you \Murel

battery #1 to the number 1 post -- and battery #2 to the number 2 post and the common post is the out going power to the RV. this will let you go from 1 or 2 or BOTH and OFF.

I have a perko battery switch on my boat. The boat has always run flawlessly. Yesterday I developed a problem with my starter and trim/tilt motors. I have verified its not a motor problem. When attempting...

I would bet that this is a ground problem since the Perko switches very rarely fail. You can easily check this by simply jumping out the switch. Temporarily remove one cable from the battery switch and bolt it onto the same stud as the other to eliminate the switch. If the problem remains the same, then it will be something other than the switch (like grounds). If the problem goes away, change that switch for a new one!
