Question about Office Equipment & Supplies
The pick up rollers sometimes get "glazed over" with residue from cheap label sheets, dust, etc. also after years of use, they get smooth. Clean the pick up rollers. Make sure that all adjustments, including paper type (thick, thin, card stock, etc.) are properly set both in the printer utilities program and mechanically, if available. Will it feed if light pressure is applied to the opposite edge from the feed edge of the paper? Might try rejuvenating the pick-up rollers (and cleans them at the same time) with alcohol on a lab swab (longer with cotton on one end only) available at almost any pharmacy - just have to ask for them. The alcohol will clean the rollers and also slightly soften them so that they have enough friction surface to grab the paper again. Most printers feed from a vertical paper position so that gravity helps feed the paper into the pick-up rollers. HP almost always feed from a horizontal tray in the front of the printer. Clean rollers are a MUST.

First check if the feed rollers are 'Slick" with paper dust, if they are ,clean then with 409 on a cloth rag, and scrub till u dont see the white paper dust on the rollers, let the rollers dry, then reset the printer, by turning it off. then turn it back on ,reinstall the paper and begin printing again.

I just wanted to add a little note to this issue. I had the same problem, except the tiny lever on the output tray microswitch was broken off, so there was no way for me to lock the switch in position with glue (or tape as suggested above). So instead, I bent the two leads for the switch as close together as possible using needlenose pliers and used a soldering pencil to melt the existing solder and fuse the leads together, effectively closing the circuit permanently. (I could also have just disconnected the two wires from the switch and soldered them together.) I now have a functioning printer.

Unfortunately this printer and alot of others like it have a very poor paper feed mechanism. I am finding that the (1) small pickup roller that is used in this and other machines like it is failing (not picking paper) prematurely or faster than i think it should (this is looking at page counts on some of these machines). We have been disassembling them and rubber restoring the pickup roller which fixes the paper jam/paper out errors.

Papper never realy "jams" the problene is usualy that the paper is late reaching the next paper sensor. What i would sugest is that you clean the paper pickup roller it is usualy in the shape of a D. Clean it with dishwassing soap dont use water just clean soap rub it on with a clean cloth until the roller is dry so use a small amount. This should solve your prbleme.

Check your printer for paper size and type settings. Ensure they are set to letter and plain1. Also check the program you are printing from (Word, wordperfect, etc) and ensure the paper size is correct there as well.

On the control panel for the printer, there's a Feed Switch button that's easily touched by accident. Ensure the Feed Switch is set to the paper source you're using (e.g. either the back or front). The graphic of the printer next to the Feed Switch button will light up to indicate the paper tray it's attempting to use.
