The OS itself does not contain wifi. Wifi is hardware that is installed in the device. AS far as the OS is concerned, yes the OS does support the wifi networking protocols. You MAY have to load the wifi adapter driver(s) for you device if Windows does not have a native one that is compatible, however. You can determine whether or not the driver is installed by going to the DEVICE MANAGER and looking at NETWORK ADAPTERS. If there is no wireless adapter present or there is an exclamation mark alongside the adapter, then you need to load the driver to get wifi functionality within the OS.

To add more info, most desktop computers DO NOT contain wifi hardware. They usually connect to the network via Ethernet cable. You can buy internal or external wifi adapters for a desktop PC if you don't want or can't cable up to the router. All tablets, laptops, and smartphones have wifi installed. You may have to go into the setup and enable it on the tablet and phone, but most laptops have a function key combination that enables and disables the wifi at your leisure. Wifi connection to the router is usually simple, but a passkey (password) is needed. This password may be preinstalled from the ISP, or you can set it up and/or change it yourself as you wish.

Hi, I will assume that you do have wireless hardware that does work in Linux. If you have found yourself with a wireless card that does not seem to work you might consider installing the latest Ubuntu and enabling the proprietary driver for your device. Most often this will have your wireless working much quicker than trying to go the ndiswrapper route. help: How to Set up Wireless Network in Linux
