Question about Texas Instruments TI-89 Calculator

Fraction problem I need to get my answers in decimals, but it just gives me reduced fractions. I can't figure out how to change it. For example, when I divide 3/4 it gives the answer as 3/4, not as .75 how can I get it to give me the .75?

When I get an answer of 3/8 how will I turn that into a decimal?

Same problem but the answer has already been solved.. thanks!

Go into MODE to the second page.  In Exact/Approximate, change it to Approx instead of Auto or Exact.  This will give you decimals instead of fractions.

Which is more precise, fractions or decimals??

Fractions can be more precise than decimals. For example: 1/3 can not be expressed exactly as a decimal. .33333333333333333333333333333333333333333... is only an approximation.
Some numbers cannot be expressed precisely as either a fraction or a decimal. pi is an example.

How to convert percent to fraction

  1. Divide the percent by 100 to get decimal number.
  2. Count the number of digits (d) to the right of the decimal point of the decimal number.Example: 2.56 has 2 digits to the right of the decimal point, so d=2.
  3. Calculate the factor (f) for making the decimal number an integer: f = 10 to power d
    f = 10 power 2 = 100
  4. Multiply and divide the decimal number x by the factor f: x * f / f = y / f
    2.56 * 100 / 100 = 256 / 100
  5. Find the greatest common divisor (gcd) of the fraction. Example:
    gcd(256,100) = 4
  6. Reduce the fraction by dividing the numerator and denominator by the gcd value: Example:
    256 / 100 = (256/4) / (100/4) = 64/25
Example One percent is equal to one hundredth:
1% = 1/100
So in order to convert percent to fraction, divide the percent by 100% and reduce the fraction.
For example 56% is equal to 56/100 with gcd=4 is equal to 14/25:
56% = 56/100 = 14/25

When I divide, I get a fraction. How do I get a decimal

If your calculator is configured to be in MthIO, the fraction that is displayed is always reduced to its simplest form. (The denominator is the smallest possible.)
If you are adding fractions, the result is also a fraction in its reduced form.
If you want to convert a fraction to a decimal number, press the [S<=>D] key.

To set MthIO: Press [SHIFT][MODE] (SetUp) and select [1:MthIO]
To set LineIO: Press [SHIFT][MODE](SetUp) and select [2:LineIO]
In LineIO, all results are expressed in decimal format.

Answers in decimals

The calculator has two Input/Output modes, MthIO and LineIO. In MthIO the results are displayed as fractions or as radicals or a mixture of fractions and radicals. What it means, is that in MthIO the calculator does exact calculations. Radicals in denominators are gotten rid of by rationalization, fractions are reduced to the same denominators before addition or subtraction. Fractions are reduced to simplest form.

In LineIO all results are displayed as decimal numbers.

If a result is exact (fractions and radicals) it can be changed to decimal form by pressing the S To D key, the one above the DEL key.

MthIO is the default IO mode. To set it, press SHIFT MODE and select 1:MthIO. To set LineIO as the IO mode, press SHIFT MODE and select 2:LineIO

How to us a fraction on the ti-83 calculator? I have home work due on this tues. and i dont know how to put a fraction in on this calculator .

Ther e is no dedicated key to do that but ther is a command ToFrac noted as ->Frac. To access it use [MATH[1:->Frac].

Two ways of using the command.
1. You want to reduce a fraction to its simplest expression
27/48 [MATH][1:->Frac] [ENTER] gives the reduced fraction 9/16

2 You do not want your results converted to decimal numbers

(27/48) [x] (5/7) [MATH][1:->Frac][ENTER] multiplies the two fractions and gives a fraction as a result. 45/112

3. Your result is in decimal form and you want to cast it into a fraction. The conversion will be exact only for certain numbers. Results kept in fraction forms are more accurate than those represented as decimals.
Hope it answers your question.

Changing decimals to fractions

You can always convert a fraction to a decimal. The reverse may not always be possible. Look at the example on the screen capture.

You may be lucky and recover a fraction you have just converted into decimal format, but you cannot just write 0.333333333333 and expect the calculator to convert it to 1/3: The true fraction 1/3 has an infinite number of 3's after the decimal mark.

How do I on a TI-84 Plus Simplify Fractions

Enter the fraction for example: enter 8/12.
The answer will be .666666
Then click Math (which is located under the Alpha button).
Click the ->Frac button (the first one).
It should come up as Ans->Frac.
Click Enter.
It should now read 2/3 which is 8/12 reduced.
Note: I have a TI-84 Plus Silver Edition, and the TI-84 Plus might not have this function, but that is how I do it on my TI-84 Plus Silver Edition
