Even new blades can be out of balance, but my guess would be either the other blade spindle, or the tensioner pulley bearing.

Yardman AE5165 Ride on. the belt that drives the cutting blades breaks regularly. Is this a common problem and is tere a solution

Check your spindles and housings. This is what the pulleys sit on top of. It sounds like the bearings may be bad on one of them, or the pulleys themselves may be bad. The shaft itself could be bent causing the pulleys to be crooked, thus shredding the belt.

The bolt holding the blades is broken off

Your st bet is to replace the entire spindle assembly.

It's not as cheap as drilling out the old bolt and using an "easyout" tool to remove it, but the outcome is certain.

Better yet do a web search on "137645, 137646 Shaft Kit For 130794 Mandrel, AYP" and you can find the shaft only with bearings.

Smoke when blades engaged on yardman 42'' yard tractor

The oil on your pulley could definitely be the culprit. You need friction in order for your belts to work properly.

I need to replace the entire blade and blade shaft but I cannot get the blade shaft and belt wheel off. Is there a trick to getting it off?

YEP BIG IMPACT Its best some times on AYP which is the MFGR of Craftsman to replace the whole thing. Casting, shaft and bearings. Drop the deck.put a peice of 2x4 or 4x4 between the housing and the blade, then take the pulley nut off with a 1/2 impact or a breaker bar and a 4 ft piece of pipe for a Cheater bar. This may take 2 people to do depending on your tools. All new housing and shaft and bearing is about $60 u may find em cheaper on Ebay.

Removing pulleys from 42 inch Craftsman mower deck

Put the blade back on the star on the shaft and tighten it down. Now you have some backup for the pulley nut. You may have to wedge a 2x4 between the blade and deck. THe EASIEST way is get an impact and zip it off. :-)

I sharpened the blades at the end of last mowing season. The next cut was very uneven, so I checked to make sure that the blades were installed properly and re-leveled the deck. The last cut was even...

The problem you discribe is the classic broken blade spindle or quill. The tube that supports the bearings between the deck pulleys and the blades is almost certainly broken. Look under the deck [mower OFF] at the piece right above the blade that is malfunctioning and you will probably find a bad bearing or a chunk of the tube that holds the bearing/blade to be missing. That happens when the blade gets 'wacked'. The outer edge is cutting too high because the belt is pulling the shaft toward the center of the deck. The quills are fairly easy to replace. Get the model number off your tractor before you go to buy the part.
