Question about Dyson DC17 Animal Bagless Upright Cyclonic Vacuum

2 Answers

I have a DC 17. In the middle of vacuuming the vacuum stopped working when it was in the upright position. It only works when the head is down and i am using the bar. I can not use the extension bar, becasue when I put the vacuum upright it shuts off. Where is the problem?

Hi there, it's Jack at Dyson.

Like most Dyson vacuums, DC17's main suction motor is protected by a thermostat which shuts the machine down if it starts to overheat. This could be due to a blockage, and the filter may also need a wash. If this occurs, the separate brush bar motor will still run if you recline the vacuum, and shut off when you stand the vacuum upright.

The vacuum should reset itself automatically after it's cooled down for around 2 hours. To prevent this from reoccurring, please wash the filter as shown in our video guide - in normal use this should be done at least once every 3 months. Use cold water without detergent, and allow the filter to dry completely for at least 24 hours before replacing it.

Once you've done this it's important to check the vacuum for any blockages - our Support guide will walk you through each checkpoint to make sure nothing is missed: http://www.dyson.com/support/dc17/dc17-allfloors/diagnosis-root-menu/dc17filterwashvid/flo-dc17-wand-suction

This should resolve the issue. However if the issue reoccurs when the filter is clean and there are no obstructions in the airways, there could be an issue with the cyclone pack itself. If this is the point please contact us directly, as we'd appreciate the opportunity to provide further assistance. I think you misunderstood the question. I am having the same issue. It is not turning all of the suction to the hose in the upright position, it is completely shutting off. No suction at all anywhere. This happened to mine very abruptly while I was using the wand extension. I thought I had blown a breaker in my home, but after some investigation, I learned that the vaccuum would still works with the head down, then as soon as it is returned to an upright position the motors completely shut off again.

Dyson dc 18 slim product breakdown

Your question could be asking several things:
A copy of the manual can be found here at Sears (
http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/user-manuals/DC18-dyson-inc-parts-UPRIGHT+VAC-manual ) if you are just looking for something that points to different parts of the vacuum and says what is where. A better copy is here (
Dyson DC18 Setup Guide ) (Trying to avoid places where you have to add some downloader bloatware to view the pdf).

If you're saying that the product is broken down, you'll need to be more specific. The manual covers general clearing of clogs and emptying. The most common aggravating situation I've seen in there for Dyson is that the upright units pretty much all shut off the brush head and suction when the vacuum is in the full upright position. This is the 'use the accessory tube' position where the suction is channeled up the handle. If you don't know that, and that there is either a button or hand-switch (For the DC18, a switch next to the main power button) that turns the brush on and off), then you can have lots of mystery working/not working behavior depending on whether the system is upright and whether the brush clutch is engaged.

Good Luck!

Dyson blueprint beater bar won't turn

The Dyson DC 17 has a rug / floor switch on the head of the vacuum. Please check to make sure the switch is in the Rug position. If the brush roller still does not turn then you have broken the belt and need the following part.

If the noise is rattly then it means the drive belt needs replacing, if your model has a protective brush on/off mode on the front plate where you would normally put your foot, it would have to be repaired officially by a repairer. Replacing a protective drive belt can only be done by Dyson repairers or those that repair Dysons.

I had this same issue today, after not being able to find a solution, I took apart the brush area by unscrewing the three simple screws... my belt had a TON of dog and cat hair built up inside it so I cleaned that out and it did the trick.
