Question about HP Photosmart C7180 All-In-One InkJet Printer
Hi - my HP photosmart C7280 all in one printer will no longer scan. I get the unable to communicate with scanning software error twice then the unable to communicate with scanning device. The printer shows up in device manager and will print. I can not scan or fax. I have uninstalled and reinstalled numerous times. I am running XP Service pack 3. Nothing seems to work. Based on the many posts the problem is probably in the registry but I don't feel competent enough to mess with the registry. In addition my restore points will not work. I am unable to restore to any restore point that I have on my HP computer. I hate to delete any HP stuff in the registry because I have an HP media center computer. Thanks for any help. I know this is not a simple fix.

SOURCE: HP Photosmart C7180 not scanning
I had this very same problem yesterday & solved it, after about 4 hours, with a clean install!!
Check my "solution" post at another question where I explained it in detail.

SOURCE: can't scan to computer
I am not an expert, only a c7280 user. I use my printer wirelessly and was having problem scanning when using the controls directly on the printer (scan menu). By trial and error, I tried scanning by going to HP solution center on my computer and just followed the directions from the scan menu. That worked. If you can print wirelessly, you can scan wirelessly. I agree the HP support is a huge waste of time. I only get mad talking to them.

I had the same problem and after spending more than 40 hours on the phone with tech support, it was determined that Adobe Photoshop is not compatible with hp solution center. You can open paint and scan with it.

This happened to me a couple times with the HP Series all in one and stand alone scanners. Goto Walmart and buy a USB hub that has a dedicated power supply. For some reason HP is notorious for this problem.

These instructions will fix the majority of scanner problems and networking problems using ethernet:
The key is to assign a static ip address for the printer. The install problems of trying to get the HP printer to be found will go away. You can then use the scanner. Also...it is crucial that when connecting other laptop's and PC's on the same network that you use the hp printer'rs host name to find the printer on the network. I find that the IP address can and usually fails to find the hp on the network. Mostly likely you cannot search the network for a hp printer until you go the route of find the hp network printer with the host name of the printer. You will also need your install disk when installing on other networl laptop's and PC's since windows xp and Vista machines don't have the drivers in the list. You will need to point the add printer gui driver to the disk and look for autorun.inf
file. After selecting that file...you can then see your drivers.
