Question about Compaq NC6000 Notebook
I recently installed a new 80 gig hd on this unit. I have been having nothing but problems it will only turn on sometimes and when it doesn't turn on the battery light will flash orange and the fan will start then stop? When it does turn on it freezes up after a short amount of time and sometimes just shuts off? Could this be because the ram was knocked loose when the new hard drive was installed? If so how the heck do i get at the ram?
Now a chineese had found out what is wrong. You have to resold a part on backside of the motherbord - Google on NC6000 MAX1987 and you will find a solosion.

That's ********. You don't need a new board. Just use a heat gun to resolder the MAX1987 CPU volt-chip back on the mainboard. It does not appear to be unstuck, but after heating it up and pressing it onto the mainboard the laptop will work.

I tried the Chinese solution. Strip right down to the mother board. Then reheat / re-solder 48 connections on IC MAX1987. They are very fine, so use a very fine point solder iron. IC MAX1987 is located on underside of the CPU chip. At the same time I cleaned fluff from copper fins of the CPU cooler.
Now the system runs much cooler and with no startup problems. Thanx RoF2000 for bringing the solution.

The ram is under the keyboard. There's 2 keyboard screws on the base and then release the 4 plastic slides at the top of the keyboard. The ram can then be found under a metal cover at the centre.
Just started having the same problems and re-seating the ram didn't fix mine.

The problem is with the motherboard and unfortunatly will require a new board. This is a problem that has started appearing with great regularity with this unit in the past couple of months. Everyone is working on a way to fix it and no-one has a solution other than replace the motherboard
