Question about Canon PowerShot S2 IS Digital Camera

1 Answer

The camera locks up

When I put my settings to view the pictures the camera works just fine, I can see them just fine. But when i turn it over to the setting to take pictures, it seems like the camera is locking up. It makes a repeating clicking noise and the screens go black only displaying E18 on the screen...It wont let me take a picture and if i keep hitting the button to take a picture the camera eventually just shuts off. However when the camera shuts off the lens wont go back in at all! This randomely happened one day no damage never dropped the camera or anything.

The E18 error is an error message on Canon digital cameras. The E18 error occurs when anything prevents the zoom lens from properly extending or retracting.

  1. There are six screws holding the metal frame of the camera body together, two on each side, and two on the bottom. Remove all screws, pop the strap-hook plate (sorry, probably not the most technical term there), then gently lift the front plate off by pulling up from the bottom, and remove the back plate in the same fashion. These should come off relatively easily. This is what the camera should look like as you remove the plates:

  2. Now, looking from the top of the camera, you should see a small motor on the left side, as shown below (its beneath the cable with a 22 written on it):

  3. Take your screwdriver (or another small instrument) and gently try to rotate the plastic piece attached to the motor on the left side, as shown below:

  4. At this point, try placing the battery back in the camera (if you have removed it), turn the camera to one of the capture modes, and press the power button. If all went well, your lens should now be able to extend and retract properly.

I don't think anything is wrong with your camera. Just check the Manual.
Your camera has a view finder, to make pictures. Yes the little screen on the top left (Backside) As an extra the camera has live view, that can be switched on and off. because the live view consumes lots of power, it is advised to use the view finder. If you want to switch it on, you can do so in the settings menu. There go to the live view en switch it on.

LCD screen and small viewfinder screen go snowy than white. When I turn the camera on the LCD worked fine, when I than turn it, it was just white. Now it won't even turn on normal. I can still make...

Go to your menus, set all to factory settings or default.
Test the camera by using more of the settings, and notice how it works.
The LCD settings especially are what you want to make sure are set right...not too bright, and of course not too dim either.

Is the battery dead? Try taking it out and charging it, then put it back into the camera.

Also, you can try using another battery of the same type.
