Hello, I have a 98 buick regal ls and I have to replace the control assembly for a/c heat. I know that I need to remove the console. Do I try to remove the console section that has the control assembly or do I need to remove the panel for the shifter first then the console for the hvac? Finally where to you access the bolts to remove the console{s]? Thank you for your help, Sarah

    Hello again,

Are you saying that I have to start by removing the armrest/storage compartment between the front seats then the console for the shifting lever and then the section that the a/c heat control assembly ?

    Hello again!

One last question, do I need a special tool for the clips?

  • sarahs_stuff Jul 16, 2009

Yes, the answers I received will allow me to do the repair myself. I was also warned how deficult the repair will be. The dealership wanted to charge me $570.00 but if I do it myself it will only cost $38.00! I normally do all the work on my car that way I know it was done right. Thanks for the help.

There is not a special tool for the clips. The clips will pop out. The thing is yeah, you need to start by taking off the armrest and that will expose the clips and screws for the center console then you get to the screws for the climate control panel, but you may have to take sections of the dash board apart too. It's a long process, lots of screws and lots of patience. Once all the dash section is out you will be able to see the screws that will take the control panel loose.

Hello Sarah,

Thanks for contacting Fixya.

You have to remove the two screws under the center console lid next to the latch. This will allow you to remove the ash tray assembly. The "Ski =Slope" is held down by two plastic wing nuts that must now be removed. Once that is done, the ring surrounding the shifter must be removed. Be careful
not to break the tabs. Once these parts are all removed, the ski slope should lift off. You may have to shift to Drive to get it to clear.

This will expose the console fascia that holds the radio and A/C controls. The fascia is removed by 6 (I think 6 -- possibly 8 screws). The entire assembly is now removed from the dash. Once out, the A/C control can easily be replaced.

God Bless.

Usually the source of the leak is the gas cap (either loose or defective) but if that doesn't apply to your issue then the canister is next to the gas tank.
