Amp won't put out sound

I was playing my amp (Ibanez TBX150R) with a wah pedal and the sound just cut out. It won't pick up anything and everything seems to be connected. It didn't blow the speaker because it would have distorted before it quit, but it was crystal clear on my clean channel. What could it be?

Re: Amp won't put out sound

Hi there,

A lot of Amps come with fuses as a safety mechanism so you don't blow the speaker and/or internal components in the case of a power surge etc. Check for a blown fuse. Sometimes they have a fuse holder in the back of the amp and it is labelled "fuse" which cetainly makes it easier to find. Hope this works and helps.

Sounds like main amplifier section circuit fault. Check all the supply connections and make sure that there is no loose contact, before you do anything. If you wish to get some details; check the site linked here. Pull up older posts. Surf the site with patience.

Peavey DPC1400x turns on, plays sound for a split second, buzzes, then goes silent. All lights show green though. What could this be?

This sounds like a power supply capacitor leaking causing a dc bias problem and amp protection shuts it down.

My NAD C326BEE amp goes into protection mode at moderate volume

The protection only should come on, when the power amplifier has to give more current than it can deliver. (electronic fuse)
If in the music is a lot of subsonic, sound, so low you can't hear and your speakers can't produce, this could cause the problem. Normal CD players will cut of all frequencies beneath 20 Hz, but it could be your PC is giving everything from 1 Hz and above.
I would certainly try to play some music over a CD player and check if that would solve your problem. Not sure if that works, what you could do to suppress the sub sonic in the computer music.

Using the fifth fret tuning method may give you your answer. If you play the same exact note on an alternate string, see if the same sound happens. If so then its probably amp. If not, then its probably the pick ups.

Old Pioneer SA 700 amp- only left channel works. It will play all inputs- tuner, turntable, etc, but right channel will play none. What's the likely problem? If I can buy the part, I'm not a pro, but I'll...

I have one of these exact amps, more than likely its the volume pot that will need a clean with some WD40 to clean the dust build up inside, try putting the balance on that channel alone and turn the volume up, if the sound kicks in or trys to kick in, this will be the problem or the track inside the pot maybe very worn on the lower setting, which will need then replacing, remember these amps are around 40 years old and chances are it has done a lot of work, if this doesn't fix the problem, as the previous post said it may be in the power amp section and could just be a dry joint on any of the componets, you can pick up all the componet parts fairly easily and cheaply nowdays anyway, let me know how you go.

Crate RFX65 solid state guitar amp has power but no sound

Sounds like the amp has developed a problem. If you had it LOUD then you may have popped a speaker or an output stage. You say it still makes the plugging in noise, what happens when you touch the end of the jack lead whilst plugged into the amp. do you get a burst of clean hum?

Sounds like you like your music like me... LOUD. If you've done this a number of times, there are a few things that can happen:

1. You've blown the speakers... but you've said it operates for 2 seconds, then cuts out.
2. You've damaged the amplifier modules within the amp and they immediately overheat upon power-up. Does the music come back like 5 or 10 seconds after the unit cuts out?
3. Thermal switch has malfunctioned and just cuts off the power to the amplifier modules as soon as it sees any heat.
4. If you've gotten the amp really HOT during playing, it's possible that it's as simple as the amp modules are only intermittently connected (fatigued/stressed or cold solder joints) at the on the PCB. Just resolder the connections of the amp module to the PCB. I've seen that happen numerous times and that's where I'd place my money.
