Sorry you are having this problem,
Sounds to me like your eMail client configuration is incorrect...
Is this a new problem where you were able to send an receive mail no problem before and now this ?
I suspect it is a new set-up.
It looks like you entered your eMail address where the software was asking for the address of the SMTP mail server...
Port 465 is for a secure SMTP Server.
Normally, the SMTP server port is 25 or 26. Have you modified your eMail settings lately ? Or maybe it works well from home but not when you are on another network....
Bigpond has implemented some security on their network, see here:
http://bigpond.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/bigpond.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=5562
So, when you are connected to the bigpond network, you must use their SMTP server:
mail.bigpond.com
Otherwise, it will reject the connection.
When you are away from the bigpond network, you might have to ask your host or whoever, who provides the highspeed internet access ? and then google for their smtp server,
ex: securenet.net smtp server earthlink smtp server

you will quickly and easily find this server and all you have to do is enter it temporarily into your SMTP server field in your eMail client settings making sure to set it back to bigpond once you are back home..
THis should get you back on your way again.

SOURCE: I have a bigpond supplied 2wire wireless internet

Check if it's recognised on the local area network etc, make sure driver is installed and you may need to reset all pc,router etc to get connection. Now remember you need a router for this to work, with only a modem it will not function. You also need to restart all instruments etc before it's picked up by the router and the network..Google a bit and it will solve this.Make sure it uses wifi and not bluetooth as then it will need the right bluetooth connection to your pc..

SOURCE: Email Address Problems

You must enter a DNS server on the "Network Settings > TCP / IP" page. If you're unsure of it, try copying your default gateway.

I wish to my bigpond email username but don't know how to set it up with the new Telstra system

contact telstra on line help section and say that you wish to connect to adapt your big pond account to T-mail
they will put you onto a technician that will help you do it
another way-- if you know how-- is to open up the e-mail page and in the top tool bar click onto the accounts tab
click on properties icon and that will open up a box with headings
general
servers
security
advanced
IMAP
click on servers
incoming server is IMAP( probably will be pop3 )so change it
incoming mail(IMAP) is-- imap.telstra.com ( mail .bigpond.com so change )
outgoing mail (SMPT) is smpt.telstra.com ( mail.bigpond.com so change )
incoming user name will be your username@bigpond,com
the password will be the password that telstra gave you when opening the bigpond account ( If you haven't written it down then you will have to call telstra to get a new password -- you cannot make it up as it has to come from telstra --
click remember password
click on log on using clear text authentication
outgoing server tick server requires authentication
click apply
next step --click on the advanced tab
outgoing mail (SMPT) make it 465
tick server requires secure connection
incoming mail (IMAP) make it 993
again tick requires secure connection
for server time outs I have mine set in the middle
click apply
go back to the e-mail page and wait for the settings to be recorded in telstra servers
you will most likely get a new inbox heading --T-mail with your user name
what has happened here is that you are rerouting bigpond servers through telstra servers

if that doesnt work then it is back to calling telstra help -technicians to talk you through it all
happy tearing hair out day but you could be lucky and get it first try

How do I remove the bigpond email from my windows 7 tablet. My account with Telstra(bigpond) is closed

go into accounts in the tool bar of the e-mail page and delete accounts you don't need
The only problem by doing that is there are many people who have you address @bigpond so if the account is closed , any e-mails from them will be returned and they will have no way of contacting you

How do i get back my bigpond web account.

If you've been locked out somehow, your account may have been hacked. If you've just forgotten your password then do the following:
You can only change the password for your BigPond Email with Outlook.com (formerly Windows Live/Hotmail) via Telstra. I am recommending that you change your password for logging into My BigPond / MyAccount this will then flow through to your email account.
Go to BigPond at bigpond.com
Click on the blue 'My BigPond' tab at the top right side of the home page.
Enter in your current username and password
Change your Password.
You can also access your email online by clicking on the webmail link this will take you into BigPond Email with windows live.
Note the new brand name is now BigPond email with Outlook.com. (formerly Windows Live/Hotmail).
If you are still having difficulty I suggest you have your password reset please visit bigpond.com/help/email and select 'Password reset'.
Hope this helps...

How to get back my bigpond email account

I would start by contacting Telstra Bigpond Customer Service and ask help also as far as I'm concerned Bigpond email accounts are tied to Bigpond Accounts, so if you still use that account I don't see why they wouldn't help you use it BUT if you've closed/lost that Bigpond account but would like to use it again THEN that might be a different kettle of fish so to speak.

Best of Luck

Bigpond Email Customer Service Call 1-805-225-6690 We are 24 Hour Available Call Now for Help..

Telstra is an Australian telecommunications company that offers email and Webmail services through its BigPond brand.
Webmail is a convenient way of accessing email from anywhere in the world over the Internet. You can access your Webmail account on any computer.
Telstra has experienced some issues with its BigPond email service that also has impacted its Webmail users.
Users have lost access to their email accounts and have been shut out of them.
Telstra Webmail users experienced some of these issues in September 2010.
Email Delays

Users of BigPond experienced delays in receiving and sending email during a few days of service disruption in September 2010.
Telstra told customers that the emails were being held on their server and would be distributed once the service was restored. According to Telstra, the problem impacted BigPond users across Australia.

Locked Accounts
During the service disruption, Telstra also locked out some BigPond users from their accounts. These users were not able to log in to their accounts.
According to the telecommunications company, they had to lock the email accounts in order to facilitate repair work.

Telstra Response
Telstra reacted to consumer concerns about these issues by providing regular updates about the status of the repairs.
One such Telstra status update, according to an iTnews report, said, "We are currently having problems with BigPond mail.
This is affecting customers nationally.
Customers may experience delays in receiving mail or accessing their accounts.
Technicians are treating this issue as a priority and are working on the problem."
Telstra stated that these problems came about as a result of a server outage.
According to user comments at TechWorld and iTnews, some users still did not see their problems resolved even after the company officially declared that it had taken care of the issue.
