On the shaft that holds the needle you will find a clamp attached to a arm on a crank
if you undo that clamp it will slide up or down the shaft and that positions the needle
needle hook timing is on the start of the up stroke where the hook should be at are very near the eye of the needle
so position the shaft in the just up positing , undo the clamp and move the shaft ( not the crank) until the needle is correctly positioned and tighten the clamp

Testimonial: "I'm unable to access that part of the machine d/t lack of special tools to open. I was able to adjust the timing from below by loosening the 2 screws on the shaft that rotates the bobbin tray. When loosened the bobbin tray does not move when the wheel is cranked so I was able to place the needle in the correct position for the thread to be caught, then I re-tightened the screws. Mom always said, "There's more than one way to skin a cat." I guess she was right."

Brother XL 260I hook timing. My needle doesn't catch the bottom thread. How do I adjust the timing to fix this?

Make sure you are using a brand new needle. Old, damaged or bent needles often will not pick up the bobbin thread.

Search the internet for "sewing machine timing"

There are multiple web sites and videos that discuss fixing timing issues.

I have a brother ls-2150 I can't pick cotton up from the bobbin

Try installing a brand new needle (verify it is installed correctly). If it still does not pick up the bobbin thread, the needle/hook may be out of time, requiring service.

How to adjust timing to pick up bobbin thread?

the eye of the needle has to be at or marginally below the hook of the bobbin case
on the up stroke of the needle so that the hook can pick up the needle thread and run it around the case
at the end of the machine there is a straight shaft that the needle arm is attached to and the clamp for the arm has a screw that can be loosen so that the position of the needle can be set in relation to the hook
singer have good pdf down load workshop manuals that explain it with diagrams

The bobbin thread is not catching the upper thread. Can't even catch the thread initially. What can I do?

there is a possibility that the needle /bobbin timing is out
check this by inspecting the needle eye position in relation to the bobbin hook
the hook should be at the needle just above the eye if the timing is correct
the method for adjustment will be in the work shop manual for the machine , available from the manufacturer on line in pdf version
failing that take it in for a service and adjustment

Top thread is picked up by hook, but never picks up bottom thread. I know how to adjust needle height. How do I adjust hook timing?

try turning the bottom spool upside down. looking at the shuttle in your palm the thread needs to be on the left hand side winding / facing anti clockwise to catch in the hook see link below for

Elna SU missing stiches and breaking thread

it sounds like the needle hook timing is out. You need to get the needle in the lowest position and measure the gap from the needle to the hook point on the bobbin shuttle. It should be 1/4". You will need to remove the foot and foot plate to be able to see. I use a 1/4" drill bit as a gauge. If you need to adjust it, you will need to remove the free arm cover to the right of the foot and loosen the 2 allen head screws that hold the drive gear. Adjust the gap, tighten the screws and retry. Usually if the needle catches the thread to early, it will make a bad stitch and the upper thread will break. If it catches to late, it will make thread loops and the machine will skip stitches. Good luck, these are a good machine and worth fixing. Phil

Timing problem

You might have to look at loosening the set screws for the gear on the lower shaft that drives the hook driver gear . Loosen the screws, slide the gears apart, then adjust the hook so it is entering the scarf of the needle on the upstroke. Slide the gears togeather so they mesh again and it should be back in time. There are other factors though such as needle height adjustment which is done with the needle bar and hook and needle clearance (the distance between the needle and hook) which should be about .030. I'm a Bernina tech but many machines work the same principle. Good luck.
