Look for the manufacturers name and model number on the gripshift and check at www.parktool.com. Look under derailleurs for repair tips which will give you an idea how they work. A twelve speed has six gears on the rear sprocket and two on the crank giving you a combination of twelve speeds. sheldonbrown.com is another good site with good articles and pictures.

Have an older Huffy female 12-spd road bike that is missing the rear wheel assembly. Looking to find a replacement as well as instruction manual...wheel assy. more important. Thanks.

Unless you have a deep sentimental connection with the bike, it may not be with it:
Rear wheel - $35-$45
Rim strip/tape - $1
Tube - $8-14
Tire - $10-20
Gear cluster - $25-40

New Huffy is about $150-250

You might be able to find a used bike or wheel at a garage sale that would work.

Using a Huffy Verona Comfort Series bike - how do you shift?

The same way they all shift (considering the different physical designs of the shifters). Each lever has a control for INcreasing required effort or DEcreasing it. They work opposite each other.

Get on a search engine and look for "how do you shift gears on a bike" for many videos.

Huffy has manuals, too.

For a Huffy Pro Beach Series bicycle model #56289K, I need a replacement Speed Grip Shift assembly for the handlebar.

Identify the brand and model and hit the search engines, eBay, call a Bike Shop. It will need to be installed. NO ONE sells just one side. Consider an upgrade since you may be purchasing both sides.

Even the Huffy site doesn't refer to the bike by model number. What's it called?

I have a Huffy Savannah model 56770 16 speed. How do I shift into gear 7 through 16 ?

Google "bicycle shifting technique", for example:
http://coachlevi.com/cycling/complete-beginner-guide-to-bicycle-gears-shifting/
You should NEVER run cross-chained (big-big or small-small). The drive train performs best when the chainline is as close to straight as possible.
Excess sideways stress on the chain will wear it out prematurely and decrease its normal efficiency.
To demonstrate this for yourself, put the bike in the same combination of gears you're having a problem with. Get behind the bike and look straight along the top of the chain. As you can see the line of the chain is a mild zig-zag where it is parallel to the bike at each gear but needs to angle across the drivetrain in between. On some bikes the chain might even come in contact with the next larger chainring when used this way.
The big-big combo uses up all available chain length and the rear derailleur will be pulled toward the front of the bike, sometimes so far that it is in danger of being snapped off.
THERE IS NO UPSIDE TO CROSS-CHAINING.
As you can see, the rear derailleur is probably not long enough to **** up all the slack this gear combination creates. There are other combinations that would yield the equivalent gear ratio without either stressing the drivetrain or dropping the chain.
The basics of shifting are these:
1) The big ring and right side of the cassette in back are for speed.
2) The small ring and the left side of the cassette are for high torque, lower speed
Ancient bike wisdom for beginners: If your legs ache, shift down. If your lungs ache, shift up.

18 speed bike 6 gear shift works fine 3 gear

You have to look if when you act on the shifting level it get hard to move or it is free, if free, probably the cable is broken.
Also check if the cable is not too loose, try to follow the cable track and move the level and see if the cable move with that, in that way probably can find where the cable is stuck or broken/loose.

If the cable is rusty or otherwise binding it won't let the derailleur fall toward the smaller sprockets when the control is moved. Likewise, it may not even let you move the control in the direction that pulls the cable (bigger rings).

If you don't know much about the process I suggest you read this:

http://coachlevi.com/cycling/complete-beginner-guide-to-bicycle-gears-shifting/

and take the bike to a Local Bike Shop for a look-see and maybe a tune-up.
