Question about Audio Players & Recorders

2 Answers

My Onkyo HT R520 has no sound, even though display and selection options all work. I shut if off one night and the next day...no sound to the speakers. I have been reading that it may be a choke coil problem. Is this something I can fix myself?

Do you have any other suggestions? I know the speaker switch is on A. When I did have sound, I lost it after I shut it off and then turned it back on. Now, how can I get sound back, and then leave the amp/receiver on?

I was hoping for an easy fix...I guess that isn't going to happen. Off to the repair shop I go, anyway.

This receiver has rpotection circuits built in that kick in when problems are detected. I suspect that the final stage of the amplifier has a problem that is preventing the output relays from turning on the speakers. Any shop that does audio repairs can easily confirm this with a couple of simple measurements inside the set. At this point, have the unit checked and get a detailed repair estimate. Armed with that info, we can guide you through the actual repair if you wish to attempt it.

Hello,

Thanks for contacting Fixya.

You may have checked it already but check to see that speaker selection switch is set to "A". Sometimes these units will loose the speaker selection during power-up. I have seen this more than once. Another thing, if you have plugged into a power strip, try leaving on unless its storming.
That will be the small button on the left side of your receiver. Your display will also show "A" or "B" when selected. If you have the manual check pages 6,32.

If you need the manual goto: http://www.onkyousa.com/download/own_manuals.cfm?cat=Systems
God Bless

Your sound might not be working because the HDMI and optical audio inputs might not be working.

I made the mistake of buying the Onkyo HT-560 and in less than two years all of the HDMI video inputs started intermittently breaking. Sometimes when you selected the channel both the image and the sound would not come though.

Also the rear speakers stopped working from time to time and I have to run the setup again to get them to turn back on.

I am not sure that Onkyo was ready to introduce this technology, it has been a nightmare and my stereo is going to cost almost as much as I bought it for to fix it.

Oh and there customer service was no help, they just told to bring it to an "authorized service center for repair". They had also had no idea where there was one in my city it took them a day to get back to me.

The Onkyo HT-S5100 looks almost identical to the HT-560 not sure if they are different in anyway.

Stay away from Onkyo in the future! I know I will.

Harmony 880 does not change input with Onkyo HT-R520 amplifier

You will either have to use your Onkyo remote to teach the Harmony those functions or try one of the similar model receivers in the Harmony software. I had to chose a similar DVD player in the list in order to get my Harmony to play nice with my DVD player.

Onkyo HT R520 Home Theatre receiver/amplifier

I had the same problem too. All functions seemed operational but I could not get any sound out of my unit. I took my HT-R520 (4yr Old) to the Onkyo Service center in Denver Colorado (DTS). I paid out $50.00 to have them diagnois the problem. I was hoping that they would listen to me and the info I found via fixya user jaf323 and fix the problem for $50.00. Not....they ignored me. They told me it was my power supply and it would be $250.00 to fix the problem. Sooo, I decided investigate the problem myself. After finding an Okyo schematic free online for the 600 model which is similiar to the HT-R520, I was able to find the L7002 coil. I took my DVM to all of the coils I could get to labled 2R2 on the large horizontal PWA on the right side of the unit as you look at the front panel and sure enough, the L7002 coil was "open". All of the other coils (approx 4) showed a resistance of about 0.3MOhm. I pulled off the bad coil and swapped it out with same coil marked 2R2 from the headphone PWA using a tweezer soldering iron. I am a novice when it comes to electronics. This was a simple fix. BTW the little coils are about 1/8" x1/8" - little guys.

Onkyo HT-R520

Hello the HT-R520 is the model of the receiver that is part of the HT-S770 package. I suggest that you check the speaker settings. Check the level of the center speaker. If you need assistance please contact Onkyo at 800-229-1687 option #3. Thank you, Onkyo USA
