SOURCE: Lens error

The most common cause of this issue on the L3 is an impact which dislodges the focus element in the very front of the lens. The metal platform that the focus system is mounted to is attached with 1 screw and is able to flex slightly under stress. When impacted it flexes and allows the focus drive to become misaligned. The lens still technically works but the camera senses that the focus is jammed and leaves the lens extended so no components will be damaged by retracting. This repair costs $145 at my shop, not an economical repair for this camera. Some parts of the focus element are accessable from the front of the lens. You can remove the metal cover (it is glued down). Generally you will not be able to re-install the lens barrier, but it can be removed without harm to the camera. When you remove the plastic plate which carries the lens barrier you will see a small metal gear, this is the base of the focus drive.

SOURCE: camera lens will not close

Hi:
Sometimes you can try to get it unstuck by looking at the lens at is is. Then determine if it appears to be at a slight angle, if so, it may be that you can force the lens in the opposite direction. This may not work, and may damage the lens further, however, since it is not working, trying may be just what is needed.
I have had some success by forcing the lens in the opposite direction as it is turned on with pressure of my fingers pushing it. It has not always worked, but I have two which worked just fine... one was a 7.1mpxl nikon and the other was a 8mpxl Canon.
They both were off track, and jumped back by a little force.
If the lens was hit or dropped, then damage can be more than can be fixed. What can happen is that the small track parts can be broken, then there is no way to get it back on track.
Also, dirt or sand can do a number on these small parts. It is amazing how these extremely small pieces of sand can jam a lens, but I have seen it happen.
Take a hint and keep the camera away from sand and water, or risk trouble.

Hi , The lens cover error is because the stepper motor in the camera is unable to open the lens cover. You have written that your lense is broken. In that case you can follow the procedure given in my doc to open the camera. You can replace the camera lens if broken.

SOURCE: lens stuck and screen saying lens eror

Try jiggling the lens. Use compressed air to blow out any grit around the lens barrel. If that doesn't do it, you'll need to get the camera serviced.

The camera screen stays black, and I can not see anything through viewfinder or on the screen. When I take pictures, they are completely black. Is the camera worthless now?

It sounds like the CCD has gone bad, in which case, the camera is not getting repaired, since it sits on the main circuit board, and you would have to buy the entire board, plus pay the extensive labor. There may be a chance that the shutter is stuck closed, and you might try some suggestions I ran across on a web blog. The blog deals with error messages and lens assembly problems, so it's worth trying:

E18 error on Canon ixus40 - lens stuck

The E18 error is an error message on Canon digital cameras. The E18 error occurs when anything prevents the zoom lens from properly extending or retracting.[1] The error has become notorious in the Canon user community as it can completely disable the camera, requiring expensive repairs.
A quick internet search for "E18" + "canon" quickly reveals hundreds of similar complaints.
ConsumerAffairs.com reports that the "lens has a feature called bellows claw, which is a gear that physically extends and retracts the lens. A piece that holds the lens, the barrier plate, is not large enough and can sometimes cause the bellows claw to malfunction, resulting in a stuck lens". The result is a black screen that only contains the error message, E18. Another problem mentioned on the site blames a sticky iris in the lens, caused by grease entering inside from the microphones built into the lens. The buildup freezes up the ability of the lens to open.

Error 2 message

I have the same camera, but not the error message. My lens occasionally will get "stuck" out. I have found that removing the battery for a few minutes then re-installing it will "reset" the camera and the lens will retract when the power button is pressed. This "fix" does not always work.
A call to Vivitar only results in the suggestion that you send it in for repair.
