sounds like you have a blockage in the suction hose --- 9 times out of 10 the blockage is at the area of the machine where the hose kinda bends down to the floor unit. remove the bottom plate ( like you were going to replace the belt ) and look up into the hose and see if it is clogged -- use a wire coat hanger to fish out any debris. also check the main filter and tap out and use a brush to clean as good as you can ( a air compressor works best for this ) .. ( some filters are made to be washed in the dish washer,, check to see if your filter can ba washed ),, after all is clean and clear your vacume should be running like new again.
the belt that drives the brush may have came off and twisted jamming brush,or could be jammed with a string off carpet edge, you will have to remove cover from bottom of unit and clean debris or replace belt.
