VOIP will no ring

Just hooked up my VOIP phone and it will not ring. Ringer volume is up

I am using a VOIP phone at home connected through my cable modem. It is a NEC D-term IPK, model #ITH-8D-3(BK)TEL. Sorry for lack of info...I am new to this type of technology. Thanks so much for any help.

  • jmccoy35 Nov 18, 2007

They are working on it, but in the meantime, I am having to sit and literally watch for the phone to light up in order to know it is ringing. So, I thought I would post something on here to see if anyone knew of a function code to enter into the phone. I can see the call arrival button light up so I know I am getting the signal and when I get a call, I press call arrival and am connected to the caller. I am sure it is something simple. Thanks for all of your help :)

That totally depends upon your phone volume,if your phone volume is by default low then you can not expect high volume from your voip.

This is related to the ringing voltage of your phone and the voltage provided from your VoIP adaptor. If your phone is a cordless one (e.g., most Motorola, GE models), try to unplug the power cord. It might get the ringtone back, but no more cordless handsets. While this problem does not have an easy solution, you might want to switch to a different phone or have another VoIP adaptor that supports high output ringing voltage.

Just "VOIP Phone" is not enough information to help you. There are many hundreds of different phones, connections, & setups you could have. What type of phone (make, model number)? Is this a VOIP phone connected through a home network, cable modem etc.. for home use? Is it a single line phone connected to a VOIP box connected to your cable modem? Is it a VOIP phone system connected to regular copper phone lines? Are you using a VOIP phone at home connected to a VOIP phone system at work?

That is a business telephone system VOIP phone made to connect to an office phone system. You are connecting this to a phone system at the office correct?

Office phone system extension can be programmed to ring or not at the system level. It's possible your station port is not programmed to ring.

Do you have anyone helping you with this? It can get extremely complicated!! Once set up properly you should be able to take that phone anywhere you can get a good high speed internet connection and use it just like you were at your desk at work.

Well, I don't know the specifics of your phone system but I do know the specifics of other phone systems. It sounds like your phone has permission to use those phone lines and to answer them but not to ring. This is the default setting in many systems where it assumes you have an operator answering calls and transferring to the right extension. In a busy office with many calls coming in it would be very annoying for your phone to be constantly ringing but most of the calls are not for you.

It's unlikely this is a feature you can turn on yourself with a code at the phone because there are too many variables. Your system has many phone lines coming in... which one should ring? line 6, all of them, just 1-3-4&7? etc.. plus the system can be programmed with timers so your phone only rings after it has rung at another location 4 times with no answer OR in sequence so call 1 rings at Joe's desk, call 2 rings at Sue's, call 3 rings at Bob's and the next call rings at your's then start the loop over spreading out the call volume evenly. Then to top it off... all these rules can change in night mode. As you can see, it can get quite complicated.

Ringer Volume

I am assuming this is on a DTU 16D nec phone. On the right side of the phone is a volume up and down button. If someone calls you, you adjust this while the phone is ringing. If you adjust it after you answer it controls the voice volume (what you hear through the ear piece) if you adjust it while the handset is down but there is no one calling you it adjusts the display contrast on the phone.
