Hi
This problem is caused by a defective motor. The motor in your machine is a reversing action motor meaning it has two directions one for agitate and one for spin. The motor can burn out in either direction therefore the effect of having spin but not agitate.
If the machine is a GE machine these use a clutch mechanism instead of the two directional method and you will find the motor clutch will have to be replaced.
As a precaution you can pull the machine from the wall - open the back panel and double check there is no broken or slipping belt before replacing the motor. Some machines have two belts and one may be snapped causing the problem you describe. In the absence of this the main motor is at fault as described.
Finally if this is a top loading machine the problem may be associated with the agitator coupling which often disintegrates on top loaders and causes this issue.
Provided the machine is cycling as normal - just not agitating - this problem is not associated with switches of any description!
Hope this helps. Please remember to rate my answer. Many Thanks.
Hi there,
It seems that there is a problem with the Lid switch -
If the lid switch is defective, the washing machine may not agitate or function at all. The switch is inside the washing machine main housing near the door frame. Often you have to raise or open the top or front of the washing machine to get to the switch. If it's defective, you need to replace it.
Good Luck!!
Thanks

a defective switch wouldn't allow the machine to work at all, and wouln't be mechanically noisy...
