Shimano 105. Front derailleur won't shift down

Hi, I was riding this weekend and when i got to a steep hill i attempted to shift down from my large ring at the front, but this failed.

When i am pressing the inside lever to shift down the is no click anymore.

I have detached the cable from the derailleur to see if loosening it would help, but this has not made a difference.

Anyone else had this problem?

It sounds like you could have two different problems. Your derailleur has become contaminated or your shifter may need to be lubed. Either way, the likely solution is the same. The best solution to get the derailleur operating again is to spray it with GT-85 or PB blaster and manually move in back and furth until it is working again. The same goes for the 105 shifter, spray GT-85 inside the shifter by compressing the brake lever and spraying towards the head of the shift cable. This will solve a non-functioning shifter many times.

The only other problem that fits is the limit screws could be wrong or the deraileur is in the wrong position. This would not be the case unless someone adjusted your derailleur before the ride you started have that problem. Or if the derailleur has moved. Both of which require the derailleur to be fully readjusted.

Hope this helps. Thank you

I had this same problem, found that the cable housing wires (in the housing for strength) pushed through the plastic end into the shifter handle housing and kept the shifter from moving freely.

I beleive your problem is addressed on page 26 onwards. It will show you how to adjust the gears in every aspect.

Shimano alivio front derailleur doesn't shift from intermidiate chain ring to the smallest chain ring in a inclined riding

There is typically not a single cause or solution to a specific shifting problem. The most common way to resolve your problem is to let off a bit on pedal pressure as you shift. The derailleur has to move the chain sideways off the teeth, and that is more difficult when the chain is under high pressure.

I have a Shimano 105 derailleur system with 105 shifters. Shifting on the front derailleur from the top to the bottom ring is very stiff and sometimes takes two attempts with quite a loud poping sound and...

First of all you need to properly clean and oil the derailleur itself. As it is spring loaded, the shifting from top to the bottom ring envolves the spring to be pulled, thus making it harder the more you downshift. When you go back (upshift), the spring itself helps to do that and you feel the shifting much more easy. The easy way to do this: Take the deraiileur off the frame, but do not dismantle it. Get the new paintbrush about 1 inch wide. Get about 1 litre unleaded petrol (better is lighter fluid, but it comes more costly). Get a bowl. Get the lubricating oil (preferably with graphite). Put the derailleur into the bowl and pour the petrol over it, just to cover. Leave for a few hours. Then take a brush and clean all the dirt and grime off by using the petrol already in bowl. When done, dry the derailleur with kitchen paper towel and clean the brush. Get rid of dirty, used petrol. Now use the rest of clean petrol and clean derailleur again, then dry in the same way. When done, apply lubricating oil to all moving parts generously (don't forget jockey wheels). When done, get rid of excess oil using paper towels again until it is nice and clean. Fit back to the frame, re-cable and see how it works. If after all the problem still persist, then there is some fault in shifter itself. To sort this you will have to go on to the Shimano website and download instructions for your shifters. Hope it will help. Leave feedback if you are satisfied with my advice.

Shimano 105 front shifter problem

There will be adjustment, check the front derailleur. There is a wire which is held by a pinch bolt, undo the bolt pull the wire out a little, tighten up and check the gears again. Do this until it works.

Hope this helps

Why the derailleur shift automatically while climbing

you need to reset the front Derailleur. there are 2 screws that set the limits. one screw is for all the way one way, and another screw for all the way the other way. when you begin shift to the smallest gear. you want the metal part of the Derailleur to be close to the chain while its on that small gear. then shift all the way to the 3rd cog and set the outer limit with the other screw and your done!

Shimano 105 10 speed rear derailleur doesn't shift up or down well and doesn't stay in gear. Fairly new ( 250 miles)

Try this:
Set your shifter to the highest gear while turning the crank. If you have to, manually set the derailleur to the highest gear.
Release the derailleur cable by loosening its screw.
Pull the cable taut and re-tighten the screw that clamps the derailleur cable.
You should be all set.
The cable stretches over time. This can be avoided by "pre-stretching" new cables. To do this, simply shift into first gear and pull the derailleur cable away from the frame (where you are able to do so) fairly hard, several times. Then you just release and re-tighten the cable like mentioned in the steps above.
Happy riding!

This is somewhere between solution and clarification request: if you disconnect the cable from the derailleur and shift up and down, does the shifter click as it should? If not, you need to disassemble and clean your shifter.

On my bike with shimano ultegra shifters and 105 front deraileur, I can't shift onto the big chainring. The deraileur is not at the stop, but I can't move it any farther. How do I fix that.

Try this first:
Shift into the little ring and release the cable. Pull it tight (with pliers) and re-tighten the cable. It should shift now. If it doesn't, the solution is a little time consuming, so i apologize in advance.
First, flip your bike onto the bars and saddle. Now shift into the small chainring and your lowest cassette cog (the largest in number of teeth). Release the cable from the front derailleur and set the adjustment knob for the front derailleur to its center point. You should find it on your down tube. Now adjust the "L" setting on the derailleur while turning the crank so that its stop sets it in a position where it just skims the chain but does not touch it. Now pull the cable taut and re-clamp the cable. Shift into the middle ring and shift the rear derailleur to its highest and lowest gears, making sure the chain does not rub the front derailleur. If it does rub (it will be in either the lowest or highest cog on the cassette), adjust the front derailleur by way of the adjustment knob to clear the rub. Then shift into the big ring and you should have no problem. Set the "H" stop if necessary.

Try lubricating the cable and housing. If it has much resistance then it will not operate correctly.
