Wireless signal inconsitent; sometimes cuts out

I have a linkysis router with a wireless feature that has served me well for years on multiple laptops. However, I am having problems with my refurbished IBM R50 that I have not experienced before. It often shows only one bar and 'very weak' signal unless I download a large file at which point it can jump to 3 or 4 ! It also cuts out with 'no signal' when idling on a website. This unit did not come with an internal wifi capability (supposedly) so I am using a linksys card but again it workd fine with the old IBM laptop (T21 I think). Other laptops in my house work fine with good signal everywhere. Changing channels on the router does little good. Is this a hardware issue or a setting somewhere? the signal just does not seem to be well managed.

If you are able to, take the the linksys card out of that IBM r50 and install it on another one of your laptops. If you get a great signal you know the card is good but if you move that card to another laptop and have the same problem you will have to replace the wireless card.If other laptops will not accept that card you can purchase a new Lynksys wireless usb adapter and see if that solves your problem. Those usb wireless adapters only cost about $35.Another way to seperate the problem would be to see if the IBM R50 will access any other wireless network with more signal strength.take your laptop to a public wireless connection(mcdonalds star bucks) any if you get a good signal than your problem is with your router.RATE ME IF THIS HELPS....Good LUCK!

Wireless routers do what is called signal shifting. This means as the signal gets weaker (either because of distance or because it has to pass through walls, strong electrical fields etc) the speed is automatically dropped to as low as 6mbps. All the obstacles will kill your signal very quickly as well. You can try moving your router to a better location or invest in a repeater to place between your wireless router and the computer.

Get the router up to a highest point in the room. If it serves multiple rooms, put it at the highest point in the biggest room. Be realistic about where it can reach too given a basic G router. If it serves two floors then the basement corner will not have 100 percent

Might be a problem with the router, or router location. Check the signal strength from the printer.
If your signal only has 1 or 2 bars, it could lose its connection very easily.

You should be able to move your modem and router, anywhere in the house, and it will not erase settings. Just have to have a strong cable signal going to the modem.

If the signal strength is not the problem, your router could be getting hot and cutting out. Or getting old and going bad. Try also resetting the router and reconfiguring it.

I have AX1300 ASPIRE acer desktop. I want to know that does this model has feature to access wireless internet.

Dear Sir,
Welcome to fixya....
Please let us tell you about the wireless internet connectivity, for connecting to a wireless medium you must have a wireless (wiFi) card installed to you system which can serve the function of sending and receiving wireless data signals, which unfortunately are not commonly pre-installed int desktop computers.. the alternative to them are external cards and antennas(wireless routers) which can serve the purpose.. such a d-link or tp-link.... please rate this solution and then visit this website in order to switch to d-link official website where u can search your product and where to buy it....

Excellent signal low speed transfer

You can boost the signal range of a WiFi computer network in several ways: Answer:
  • reposition your router (or access point) to avoid obstructions and radio interference. Both reduce the range of WiFi network equipment. Common sources of interference in residences include brick or plaster walls, microwave ovens, and cordless phones. Additionally, consider changing the WiFi channel number on your equipment to avoid interference.

  • upgrade the antenna on your router (or access point). WiFi antennas on most wireless base stations can be removed and replaced with more powerful ones.

  • add another access point (or router). Large residences typically require no more than two APs, whereas businesses may employ dozens of APs. In a home, this option requires connecting your primary wireless router (access point) to the second one with Ethernet cable; home wireless routers and/or APs don't normally communicate with each other directly.

  • add a bi-directional WiFi signal amplifier to wireless devices as needed. A WiFi signal amplifier (sometimes called "signal booster") attaches to a router, access point or Wi-Fi client at the place where the antenna connects. Bi-directional antennas amplify the wireless signal in both transmit and receive directions. These should be used as WiFi transmissions are two-way radio communications.

  • add a WiFi repeater. A wireless repeater is a stand-alone unit positioned within range of a wireless router (access point). Repeaters (sometimes called "range expanders") serve as a two-way relay station for WiFi signals. Clients too far away from the original router / AP can instead associate with the WLAN through the repeater.

Router randomly stops sending out wireless signal

You may be getting interference from other routers in your area.
Check to see what channels the other routers are broadcasting in your area, change it to a channel that is not being used.
The location of the router could affect the signal strength, move the router away from concrete reinforced walls etc, and or move the router to a higher position in a clear space.
