U1153 is a code that sets when one of the modules is not communicating , what it means is one of the modules is off line. I don't know how much you know about newer vehicles , There is a serial data communication network that the control modules use to share data . Most newer vehicles have 10 or more such modules , ecm- engine module , air bag , anti-theft , anti-lock brakes , some sort of a body control module , transmission, HVAC - heating , ventilation , air conditioning ! Newer cars use CAN- controller area network , GM - GMLAN , class 2 data bus ! You need a up scale scan tool to do this repair an possibly a oscilloscope !

Hey Earl, what's going on ? The air bag module is usually under the passenger seat or the center console ! The only way to turn off the light is with a up grade scan tool , not code reader. An the light is on for a reason , problem with the system ! If you don't know about this don't mess with it , you could deploy an air bag !
The AIR BAG indicator, located on the instrument panel cluster (IPC) is used to notify the driver of SIR system malfunctions and to verify that the SDM is communicating with the IPC. When the ignition is turned ON, the SDM is supplied with ignition 1 voltage and requests the IPC to flash the AIR BAG indicator 7 times. While flashing the indicator, the SDM conducts test on all SIR system components and circuits. If no malfunctions are detected the SDM will communicate with the IPC through the class 2 serial data circuit and request the IPC to turn the AIR BAG indicator OFF. The SDM provides continuous monitoring of the air bag circuits by conducting a sequence of checks. If a malfunction is detected the SDM will store a diagnostic trouble code (DTC) and request the IPC to turn the AIR BAG indicator ON. The presence of a SIR system malfunction could result in non-deployment of the air bags. The AIR BAG indicator will remain ON until the malfunction has been repaired.

Without testing we'd only be guessing . complex electronics involved , control module's , serial data communication network's etc...The switch is a input to the instrument cluster microprocessor which is hooked to the C.A.N - controller area network serial data communication network for the computers on the vehicle . This problem would take research , factory service repair information. Hooking up a professional type scanner or the factory tool ,checking for DTC'S - diagnostic trouble code's in all the modules on the vehicle ( 20) or so. Viewing data parameters on the scanner. With the complex electrical an electronics on your vehicle it could be a lot of different thing's .

012 GM Class II Communications

According to the wiring diagram, there are two 10amp fuses marked #20 and #21 that power the occupant restraint control module.
The system gets power from this module.
The pink and orange wire is hot when the key switch is in the run position.

• The Air Bag Warning light on your dashboard functions just link a check engine light does. When it comes on and stays on there is a issue and the only way to know is to get it Airbag Control Module scanned by a VAG com scanner.
• I don't know if Auto Zone can scan this but it is worth a try as they are free. If they don't then you will have to go to a repair shop and have it scanned. Once you get it scanned you will know what is causing the Air Bag Warning light to stay on. Then you can post it hear and I can assist you further. There is really know way to know until it is scanned.

You just need to turn it off again. You created a false trigger of the light. You may have to have dealer do it with scan tool.


Prove Out Procedure
Turn the ignition switch from the OFF to the RUN position and visually monitor the air bag indicator with the air bag modules or restraint system diagnostic tools installed. The air bag indicator will light continuously for approximately six seconds and then turn off. If an air bag supplemental restraint system (SRS) fault is present, the air bag indicator will either:

• fail to light.
• remain lit continuously.
• flash.

The flashing might not occur until approximately 30 seconds after the ignition switch has been turned from the OFF to the RUN position. This is the time required for the restraints control module (RCM) to complete the testing of the SRS. If the air bag indicator is inoperative and an SRS fault exists, a chime will sound in a pattern of five sets of five beeps. If this occurs, the air bag indicator will need to be repaired before diagnosis can continue.

The restraints control module (RCM) performs the following functions:

• signals the inflators to deploy the air bags in the event of a deployable crash.
• monitors the air bag supplemental restraint system (SRS) for faults.
• illuminates the air bag indicator if a fault is detected.
• flashes the air bag indicator to indicate the lamp fault code (LFC) detected.
• communicates through the data link connector (DLC) the current or historical diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs).
• signals the generic electronic module (GEM) to activate a chime if the air bag indicator is not available and another SRS fault exists.

NOTE: The safing sensor is internal to the RCM and is not repaired separately.
The RCM monitors the SRS for possible faults. If a fault is detected while the ignition switch is in the RUN position, the RCM will illuminate the air bag indicator located in the instrument cluster.
When the ignition is cycled (turned off and then on), the air bag indicator will begin its prove out sequence. During prove out the air bag indicator will illuminate for six seconds, go off for two seconds and then, if a system fault exists, flash the two-digit LFC. The air bag indicator will flash the LFC five times, then it will remain illuminated for the rest of the key cycle. The RCM will also communicate the current and historical DTCs through the DLC, using a scan tool. If the air bag indicator does not function, and the system detects a fault condition, the RCM will signal the GEM to activate an audible chime. The chime is a series of five sets of five tone bursts. If the chime is heard, the SRS and the air bag indicator require repair.
LFCs are prioritized. If two or more faults occur at the same time, the fault having the highest priority will be displayed. After that fault has been corrected, the next highest priority fault will be displayed.
The RCM includes a backup power supply. This feature provides sufficient backup power to deploy the air bags in the event that the ignition circuit is damaged in a collision before the safing and air bag sensors determine that deployment is required. The backup power supply will deplete its stored energy approximately one minute after the battery ground cable is disconnected.
Electrical System
The electrical system that supports the air bag supplemental restraint system (SRS):

• is powered from the battery through the ignition circuit.
• provides the electrical path from the restraints control module (RCM) to the air bag modules.
• provides the electrical path from the RCM to the air bag indicator.
• provides the electrical path from the RCM to the data link connector (DLC).
• provides the electrical path from the RCM to the generic electronic module (GEM).

Usually a lit airbag can be attributed to faulty wiring, crash sensor behind the front bumper, bad connection between the airbag and lower part of the steering column, or a faulty airbag module. I've also heard of clockspring wiring harness problems. An airbag "on" light means that your airbag system is INACTIVE. Be careful. Check for a safety recall. You must have the battery disconnected for at least 15 minutes for a reset and double check your battery. I know it seems simple, but a poor battery will trip a code. 15 minutes allows the SDM (Sensing Diagnostic Module or Airbag computer) to discharge the backup power for airbag. Do this especially if you're poking around the controls. It sounds like a bad connection which is not allowing communication between all parts of the system. Also check the fuse (can't hurt).
