You just did, the spark control box has gone out
you should check your battery, it shoudl be the NON maintenance free type
i found out the hard way
the maint free batteries will charge at a higher rate and put too much voltage to the black boxes
if you have the proper battery check the regulator rectifier

# 1 3 5 spark box should be the inside one
good luck

Will a ignition coill on a 1997 Mercury Tracer 4 cylinder not get fire to 1 plug and the other 3 work good.

Sounds like the coil pack has failed. Before you buy a new coil pack (around $60 at any auto parts store) check out this website http://easyautodiagnostics.com/ford_coil_pack4/escort_focus_coil_1.php

Run through their directions on how to test the coil pack. Good luck

Mis fire on no 5

Check compression, but make sure you put injector in the right spot. Also double check firing order. Also gap on plugs. Did you drop one maybe?
