Maxtor external harddisk recognition problem by pc

Hi, I have a Maxtor S TM 3250620A external storage device and suddenly the windows explorer of my vista laptop (sp1) does nog recognize it anymore, after it took about an hour last night to open a folder with photos. I stopped that process while it was still reading. Now, when I open my explorer and switch on the external disk, it immediately blockes everything else and the moment I switch the external disk off or yank the usb cable out of my laptop, my laptop comes back to life. Then I get the message that it can't read an unformatted disk en wants to format it (but by then it is already turned off, so I couldn't if I wanted to). I have three years worth of photo and film stored on it, so I don't want to format the disk. Can you help me to regain access to my external disk?
Thank you in advance.

Thanks Chris. At least now I know I can't solve the problem myself. I'll go and find a computerstore in the neighbourhood and ask them to put the disk in a new housing. If that doesn't work, I'll get back to you.
    Grtz, Max

Hi Maxtarm,

It sounds like either the drive or enclosure is failing rather quickly.

The first and cheaper solution is to take the drive to your local computer shop and have the techs there move the harddrive into a new enclosure and test it. If it works in the new enclosure, you're done, but please take my advise and never rely on a single copy of your files. Always keep your important files in 2 or more places, on your computers hard drive, external drive and a backup to CD's or DVD's you can store in a firesafe or friends home is a good idea.

Now assuming that change of enclosures doesn't work, you will need the help of a recovery pro to get your files back. If that is the case comment back here with your location (Country, state, city) and I will advise you on a reputable recovery provider in your location.

Hope this helps Fixya,

Chris

Spend $30 to buy an "empty" disk-drive enclosure, and "transplant" your 500GB drive into that case, to create a new external storage device.

If the external hard disks is plugged to a USB port and is not detected anymore, try uninstalling the USB Root Hub devices in the device manager. They will automatically be reinstalled on reboot and that can help fix detection issues.

But did you look in the Disk Management module of Windows to see if the disk is there? Right-click My Computer and select Manage.

Harddisk data not acceseble

please give some more details on the machine and OS u are using, sounds like you have got windows installed and the external harddisk is being recognized as an unknown hardware device.
you may face following problems:

- either you need special drivers for it suiting to the windows version u are using(google!)
- or your PC still has only the 1.1 USB ability
but the external hd is 2.0 USB and that's producing trouble

anyway

in windows XXX:
-make sure you are logged in as an administrator
-then you may try to find the harddisk using the windows explorer or
-left-click'start' goto 'system' then 'hardware'. double-click now and perform a search for new hardware
- does windows find the harddisk now?
- let it install the drivers, unplug usb-device, reboot, reconnect and now it can be found like any other harddrive

good luck - if still facing the problem, please post another request on fixya and give more details on your pc and the harddisk..

I backed up my old Dell laptop last year. I bought a new Dell laptop. I want to access the backup on my Maxtor and cannot do it. I want to load it onto my new laptop. How do I do this? I want to back up...

Very Simple. Just connect the Maxtor External Hard drive to your new laptop. Open Windows Explorer and you will see the Maxtor appearing as a Drive. Access the files from the explorer.
My advice is that create a new folder on the maxtor and then do a backup of your new laptop on to this new folder.
DO the same for your office PC.

External memory - sd card recognition on pc??

if it doesn't even appear on windows explorer either the sd card, usb link or iriver is defective. if all else fails try getting a memory card reader. this allows you to store files on the card through the computer and still be able to insert the card as external storage on the iriver x20. the only trouble with that is that its hard to get the card in and out of the iriver
