Small motors need a capacitor to start rotating. It's,located on the side of the motor under a metal cover. Check iot, it may smell or have black goo oozing from it. Replace.Take it to a motor shop and they will have it. If you don't have a shop, get the micro farad (uF) rating and voltage rating and buy it from Grainger.com

I have a Delta DP200 drillpress. The motor is scorched. Can anyone advise a heavier duty motor (e.g., 1/3 or 1/2 hp) that will work with the same 4-hole mounting plate? is it common practice to use older...

Motor amperage and HP go hand in hand. Get the biggest motor that will fit and you will be fine. Better too big than too small - the latter will have higher tendency to burn out with heavy jobs like yours did.

Dryer motor hums but does not turn when start button is pushed

If you hear the motor humming and not starting at all it most likely has a severe friction problem with the drum or motor. It could possibly have some type of garment jamming the blower wheel preventing the motor from starting too.

Open the dryer door and manually rotate the dryer drum counter clockwise (CCW). It should take very little effort to rotate the drum. If it's hard to rotate that could explain why the motor hums instead of starting up. If it turns freely, shut the door and see if will start. If it still hums and not start it may have bad motor or a low voltage supply to the motor.

Press the start button on dryer, it hums but wont turn. With 2 people pressed the start button again, held the door switch, reached in turned the drum, it hummed stopped humming then no more nothing....

Sounds like a weak motor. You'll have to get a new motor installed. They are fairly inexpensive and easy to install yourself on that type of machine if you are handy. Motor is located in the bottom right of the machine, attached to the drum belt through a small pulley underneath the drum next to the motor.

When statrting the dryer it doesn't start but hums

Sounds like a bad motor to me. If you hold down the start button and hums while its pressed its the motor. Depending on how old it is should determine your decision of whether or not to have it fixed. Hope this helps...

Dishwasher starts to fill then just hums

Sounds like a motor problem. Behind the chopper is an access to the impeller, try turning the impeller or the chopper blade and see if the motor will rotate. If it doesn't, then something is stuck preventing the motor from running.
