If you are using Windoes XP. you still need to reinstall the Audio Driver CD that came with your laptop.
otherwise you can visit the website of your laptop and look for Drivers and Downloads.

If you are using xp
Go to control panel
Click on sounds and audio devices
click on voice
See voice playback?
click on volume make sure there is not a check mark in mute under microphone
Do the same for voice recording
and check the volume levels on both
