1 Answer

I have had this WD 1tb external hard drive for about 1 year now. It worked fine until recently. Now it is not recognized in the computer. I hear it connect when i plug it in, but i don't see the drive in my computer. Under disk management it say drive not initialized. How can I remedy this problem without compromising the data on it. i have also tried different computers the drive is nt recognized.

I'm afraid this is not an easy thing to say...
I had the exact same Ext. Hard Drive and within a week it failed on me.
The problem is with Western Digital, they have made a faulty drive that fails on the littlest thing.
The only solution to your problem is to buy a new ext. hard drive.
I highly recommend purchasing a Seagate 750Gb, they go for 150 dollars these days.
I've had two of them for a while now and they run without a hitch.
Sorry to tell you the bad news.

I fixed that problem with a WDC My Book Home 1TB in Windows 7:

The drive was recognized in computer management and in device manager but no drive letter was allocated while connected with a e-sata cable.

1.in computer management > storage > disk management
2.rightclick drive 1 or wathever the number of the WDC drive (which should be basic at this time)
3.select 'convert to dynamic disk'
4.drive should get a drive letter
5.format (warning: all data get lost, but you can download original software from wdc.com)

Succes!

1tb WD external hardrive not mounting, can't access my info ?

First of all, restoring a hard drive rarely affects data stored on it. I usually just adjusts the supporting software that allows it to run properly. Definately check the manual prior to restoring it, though. Formatting it will absolutely erase everything (unless your the FBI). I'm about 99% sure that restoring it will leave your stored data completely unaffected.
You're better off performing the work using the newest OS available. BTW, your BF can plug into the internet and get upgraded to 10.4.11 as well for free and it doesn't take long.

WD 1TB Hard-drive, worked perfectly now it won't :'(

If you go into Administrative Tools, Computer Management, you will see a tree for disk management. It should be listed there - probably without a drive letter..
You can partition and format there.

To get to administrative tools: Go into your control panel - click on classic view and it is one of the top options.

You need to go into the BIOS of your computer and change the boot order of your computer.  Your computer must be set to boot from your main hard drive only.
