When you power up the computer press F2 or "del" or "TAB" key to enter in bios .
Then enable usb 2.0 legacy enabled. Also set first boot device in boot option as your cd-rom then save settings then check.

My Dell Windows 7 laptop won't boot?

Press the Delete key during start up, to enter its bios settings window. At boot sequence selection, select CD ROM as first boot device, Hard disc to second boot device, and deselect all other boot devices. Means, there should be only CD ROM and Hard disc as boot devices, as said above, in sequence. Select 'Save and reboot' at the bios option, the computer will restart with hard disc; provided there is no CD at CD ROM. Gopakumar Gopalan Google

Hello, I have Sony Vaio laptop model VGN-FS515, my internal cd -rom is not working, I've tried to reinstall computer's system from my external cd/dvd -rom, but can't do it because my BIOS doesn't support...

It sounds like you have done your homework, I suggest checking out ebay for a replacement for your CD-ROM, new would be better, but if you want to save money you might be able to scoop up a good used one at a cheap price.

Usb dvd writer can install xp?

Yes you can use a usb external cd/dvd-rom to any operating system as long as the bios allows you to, most bios's have the capability.

When the external usb drive has been connected power up the mechine, in post it should tell what to press to enter your boot menu without entering your bios and choose usb drive to boot.

Make sure the BIOS is fully updated from the HP website. Most DL3-series servers supported booting from an external USB cd, try F10 or F12 at boot in order to bring up a boot menu.

Not booting from extrenal cd rom

Hi there.
Go into the bios of the computer, this is usually F2 on start up, go to boot options/priority and set the first boot device to USB, (make sure the external drive is connected). Save the changes and exit the bios, the computer will restart and boot from the external.

Good luck and thanks for using FixYa!!!

Laptop won't boot from external CD drive yet internal one is unresponsive

if you want to boot a cd e.g windows xp os disk then you have to go to the bios by pressing del or f2 or f8 ot f10 depending on the motherboard you use. try to find boot option -> boot priority or first boot device.if you find boot priority then select cdrom as first priority . if you find first boot option then also select cd rom. sometime if your disk is not bootable then it won't boot.

Windows XP Unsuccessful on Start Up

no you just need to fix your bios problem, if you dont have the manual take the battery out of the motherboard that keeps power to the bios keep it out for a few minutes put it back in then turn it on it should go to bios automatically then just go to set best defaults for ststem hit y for yes then hit enter and it should take off fine if it dont then you need to take it to a pro who can reset it for you manually or reprogram it that would be cheapest for you without trashing it.
