Hi..

You need to unplug the washer. Locate the source of the odor then read the instructions in the related section. You need to open the back cover, Check the parts which is spark, and become faulty, there is a short circuit, that become loose contact.

My 110V washing machine was plugged into a 220V outlet. After briefly emitting a burning electrical smell, the washer now does not work. Who can fix it?

you first have to get a technician out to properly diagnose the extent of the electrical damage
get a quote to fix as the fix may cost more than the unit to replace
other than that junk it and get a machine that runs on the proper voltage

Burning smell Kenmore 50558

If the burning smell is an electrical smell it could be motor or wiring problems which are best handled by a professional. If it smells like burning rubber it is probably the belt. If it smells like burnt wood it could be the belt slipping on the brush roll, if the brush roll is made of wood. Dust and debris can also accumulate behind the end caps of the brush roll causing friction which can cause a burning wood smell.

The motor could be leaking oil. Pull the machine out and look for stains or puddles on the floor.

My washer keep shorting out why is this

It may be the motor, transmission, or both. If these are shot on your washing machine, the result may be an electrical burning smell. Both are necessary to run your washing machine and can be costly to repair. The first thing to do if you notice an "electrical" smell in your washing machine and not a "rubber" burning smell, is to unplug the machine and call the manufacturer or a repairperson.

An electrical burning smell may also be caused by a water leak coming into contact with electrical wiring. Both are major concerns and should be addressed immediately. A water leak can cause structural damage in your home and can short out the electrical wiring in your washer and cause additional damage to the machine.

Another more likely cause of a burning smell in your washer is overloading. Adding too many clothes to your washing machine can stress the motor or transmission, causing them to overheat or malfunction and emit a burning smell.
If the washing machine is old (15 - 20 years) you could have nuisance tripping on aGFCI outlet, however that doesn't mean you get rid of the protection of the outlet, it means you probably should consider replacing the washing machine for a newer model.

Dryer part, smells burnt and is extremely loud

If you notice a burningsmell in your washing machine, the cause could be any number of things. Regardless, this is one smell you shouldn't ignore. It's important to quickly diagnose the problem and find the solution.
The "Burning Belt" Smell

Older, top-loading washing machines use a belt drive to transport energy from the motor to the transmission and pump. The belt can prevent costly repairs to the motor or transmission by slipping, stretching, or breaking if there is a malfunction in the machine. If the belt slips, stretches, or breaks, it can cause friction and a burning smell, most likely a burning "rubber" smell.

The solution is actually quite simple: you need to replace the drive belt on your washing machine. You can call a repairperson or, if your washer is under warranty, the manufacturer. If you or someone you know is handy, you can replace the belt yourself. The belt is located either from the back access panel or from the underside of the washer.

Most new washing machine models are "direct drive." This means they do not use a belt. The motor is directly connected to the transmission. If you have a direct drive machine and your washer smells like it is burning, read on.
Electrical Problems

If your washer smells and you have a direct drive machine, it may be the motor, transmission, or both.

Other Causes

Another more likely cause of a burning smell in your washer is overloading. Adding too many clothes to your washing machine can stress the motor or transmission, causing them to overheat or malfunction and emit a burning smell. For top load washers, overloading can cause the agitator to freeze or malfunction, stressing the drive belt and causing friction, which could emit a burning rubber smell.

To prevent overloading, know the size of your washer. They are measured in cubic feet. In addition, know how many towels, pants, shirts, and other items you can safely load. When it doubt, do smaller loads. Not only will this prevent overstressing the machine, it will also ensure clothes are thoroughly cleaned and rinsed.

Washing machine filled with water, started agitating, then stopped. smells electrical.

Washing machines are built, sealed so that water or any other liquid that enters into the drums, dryer compartments will be isolated and not penetrate to the electrical system of the unit. There are protections to the motors installed beneath. To give you an idea, a motor mostly installed on it is a split-capacitor single phase motor which is protected by a fuse, thermal overload sensor to prevent burning the winding. A possibilty of electrical burning smells is that, a possibility that the thermal protection of the motor winding didn't open or activate. So that the winding may have been burnt and i'm sure your machine will stop immediately. There is also that timers which are cam driven, there is a strip on the timers and switching between clockwise and counterclockwise rotationion is done here. There is also a possibility that this switches strip may have been warp and burning would have occured due to uneven contact points already, carbonization inside this switches would take place, and your machine would stop. I hope this will help, thanks

BURNING SMELL COMING FROM MY WASHING MACHINE

if it smells like rubber burning then i would suspect a belt is worn or slipping or somthing has jambed the basket from turning .. the belt is not expensive ..labor of course would be extra .. if the burning smells like insulation or a strong electrical burning smell then you may have a bad motor .. those used to be about $70 + labor .. no telling what they get for them now ...

you mention that the smell came from inside ... do you mean inside where the cloths are (the tub) or inside the cabinet (outside of where the cloths are) ...if the smell was coming from inside the washing tub .. then i would suspect something cought between the inner and outer tubs .. if the smell is not from there then the first suggestions above are good ... bras and slippers and such are good for getting cought .. check where the movable tub (with holes) meets the outer tube (no holes) .thats at the very top of the tub .. ..make sure nothing it cought there ...
