The ac fan starts as soon as the ac is switched on
the fan is provide cooling of the condenser before the radiator to prevent high head pressures in the ac compressor
it is the fan at the front of the car mand does not affect engine temp
there is a radiator fan between the engine and the radiator that will not start until the coolant temperature reaches a set temp at which point the ECM switches that fan on
if that fan is not working when the engine is hot , check for fan, coolant temperature sensor switch , fan relay, fuses or problem ECM

SOURCE: Radiator fan problem

Call up the dealer and ask what commands the fans to come on once the car reaches operating temp, on alot of imports, there is a fan control box of some sort that actually sends the sig to the fans to come on.

If it's the temp sensor and the computer tells the fans to come on you could be looking at a faulty computer.

This would deffinetly be worth taking to the dealer to diagnose so that you don't keep wasting your time and money chasing a ghost.

Martin, You should replace your fan motor. One fan is for ac and one is for normal driving without ac. Your car is getting to hot. Hope this helps, these fans are available aftermarket as a whole assembly. Check out ebay I have seen them on there I have a wholesale company I buy them through.

SOURCE: 95 grand am radiator fan only runs with AC on

Cooling Fan Temp Sensor is the First thing You Check (with what you have described) Cooling Fan Should ALways come On When The A/C is turned On as A/C Adds A Load to Engine, If Temp Sensor is Faulty it Will Not Give GROUND Signal to ECM >For COOLING FAN >RELAY to Give ground and turn ON The Fan.
There ARE 2 temp Sensors that Serve Different Purposes 1 is for Dash READING GAGE & Or TEMP LIGHT the Other is For ECM or Fan Relay (SAME Thing) you Said>""can disconnect the sensor and fan continues to run" < This Leads me to think you Changed the Wrong One. Not Questioning your Skills Just Here to Help.
TEMP SENSOR FOR 3.1L V6 is Located upper RH rear of engine compartment, near exhaust system. Temp SENSOR for 2.3L Engine is Located in LH rear of engine compartment.
I Hope this Helps Lead you to a NON-OVERHEATING Pontiac.
Good Luck and Have A Great Evening. rejakwilson

SOURCE: 2001 Saturn SC1 Overheats when AC is turned on

Hello donezero,

Thank you for choosing fixya.com.

Try replacing the thermostat first. I see you mentioned that it overheats with the A/C on, while in neiborhood streets (or lower speeds). Also, with the vehicle parked, and the car running, raise the hood, and watch to see if the fans are coming on. If not, check the fuses in the fuse box. You may have a blown fuse. Examine both top and bottom radiator hoses to make sure there are no cracks, holes, or bubbles. If they look like they need replaced, replace them. Also, check the fuse and any relays that may be associated to the A/C pump - there should be one of each. By changing the thermostat, you eliminating it right away for being the reason of overheating. After diong all this, and the car still overheats under these circumstances, replace the temperature sensor, which is located on the intake manifol (usually close by the thermostat ) driver side of engine, toward front or center. (may be on passenger side, depending on engine). If this does not take care of the problem, consider a certified mechanic for further assistance.

I sincerely hope this information is helpful in getting your car (A/C) running properly. Let me know if I can be of further assistance in this matter. Thank you again for choosing fixya.com.

SOURCE: car overheat

The rad fan is required to keep your engine at a normal operating temp. When you are going at hiway speeds the fan is not needed. When you stop then the fan has to operate to keep the engine cool.If the fan is not operating, it could be the fuse or fan relay or temp sensor or computer This problem should be checked by someone who is a professional..

My car over heated with AC on at stop light pulled over turned car off cooled down fast checked coolant level all ok started back turn AC on did'nt overheat again could my coolant sensor be going bad?

Could be but I would get it checked. There could be an air pocket in the cooling system, sticking thermostat, fans not working or water pump not pumping efficiently. Overheating can cause blow headgaskets, cracked head or blown engine all of which are very expensive to fix.

I have an 06 mazda 3. About a week ago while at a red light. I noticed my AC stopped blowing cold. Then when I accelerate it blows cold. Also my engine started overheating. Ive concluded that the issue was...

if your engine is overheating could be the problem of the ac not working , check the temperature sending unit located by thermostat housing , if it is bad will not let the radiator fan come on when ac is on and will cause your high side pressure ac line to get to hot causing the high side switch to disable the fan , also check the blower motor resistor it controls speed of blower motor

Engine cooling fan only works when ac or defrost is on

if engine at long stand still, the engine temperature will rise about 190 degrees the cooling fan suppose to automaticaly turn on when coolant temperature sensor get hot it cause its resistance decrease causing pcm to send power to coolant fan relays and cooling fans, when you turn on AC the cooling fans suppose to turn on to cool down AC CONDENSOR, IF NOT AC WONT WORK COOLING FAN COOLS DOWN REFRIGERANT SO IT CAN RECYCLE THROUGH THE SYSTEM AGAIN.your cooling is suppose to turn on when engine at a sit still if vechicle not moving as coolant temperature rises at a set point the cooling fans will turn on cool down engine.cooling fans dont turn on when you first cold stsrt vechicle unless you have AC SWITCH ON.if cooling fans dont turn on when vechicle at a long stand still or moving along slow traffic.if coolant temperature sensor been replaced and fuses and relays okay have dealership check see if pcm driver circuit working faulty pcm will cause cooling fans not to turn on.

Overheating problem, what is the most probable cause?

You need to stop using it immediately before you
cause some damage or more than you may already have
That is just common sense. It should not overheat or
be any different than it was in the past without problem

The car has to be checked over/diagnosed,tested,etc for
various issues to resolve

Borrow or Rent a car until resolved

No way to guess at the problem

You should have some type of codes avail even
if the check light isn't on,you need professional help
to get a start on resolving

The timing belt maybe worn & jumped or the head gasket
bad.

Over heating isn't usually a cheap repair unless the thermostat
sticks partially closed

The RPM moves around the car is 11 years old,so it may just
need a though going over

Timing Belt,O2 Sensors,Exhaust Converter,Spark Plugs
and such

If you depend on a repair shop to do things & don't
have the knowledge to request work done throughout
the year, then you run into a lack of proactive preventative
maintenance situation. Most things are simple looking
back, once resolved

1999 mazda 626 cause overheat ???

I would look at the owners manual and make sure that it calls for a 40 amp fuse. Maybe it's not the right size. But you don't want to go too big because if it is shorting out in the wiring it could cause a fire. Make sure you have the right size fuse if not, there is a short in the wiring or in the fan motor itself.

Cooling fan does not work

A quick check to see if it is the relay is to turn on the AC, the fan should come on while the AC is on. If it doesnt you are more than likely going to have to replace it.

Radiator fan not turning on 02 intrepid

maybe the sensor that turns on the fans might of gone bad . . and turning on the ac when engine is gettin hot is not going to help instead turn on the heater to reduce the heat , also overheating causes hoses and gaskets to get soft and get destroyed
