My Rinnai Convector 400 alarm keeps going off ???

Has worked fine in the past. Last night after being on for an hour or so the alarm went off. I let it shut down then restart and it gets going but at intervals before the alarm goes off again. The room has ventilation and the rear mesh intake cover is clean so I'm at a loss....and getting cold !!! Any help would be appreciated ! Thanks !

SOURCE: Rinnai freestanding Royale ETR flame fire (mains

I had the same problem with this unit and had the heater serviced which fixed the problem. The problem is caused by the pilot flame not being big enough to keep the thermocouple hot, so the heater thinks the flame is out and it turns the gas off! The thermocouple is effectively a switch that is on when hot and off when cold. The pilot flame is supposed to keep it hot, so its on and the main burner will get gas. When its off (ie cold) gas is blocked from the main burner for safety reasons! This manual is for a very similar heater:

You need to get at the pilot and clean it out!

SOURCE: Rinnai Energysaver 1001FT, ignites, blows 5mins then shuts down.

Sounds like it is reaching high limit...either the filters on the back are plugged, or the manifold pressure isn't adjusted properly. IF the exhaust were plugged on the unit, it wouldn't fire at all, since it has a pressure switch to verify vent flow. The slightest blockage, the unit will lock out to prevent damage to the unit.

This is a devious problem which could lie anywhere. So many things not functioning would perhaps be a ground problem. Maybe take some extra care in cleaning the battery terminals, check if the ground wire is connected to the chassis. Do you have rodents in your area? Maybe they nibbled some wire somewhere?

The most likely cause is a broken earth wire and or bad connection

Cannot get alarm to go off and car wont crank. 1997 Accord

It ended up being my alternator. No one could figure it out with stantard know-how, i had to take it to a Auto Parts Store for a load test on battery, they found the alternator was pulling battery down and causing alarm and security to enable start-up. Thanks for getting back in touch with me.
